12-25   Merry Christmas to all and balls for Karl!

It has been a colder and snowier December than we have had in awhile. Seiko and the younger adult dogs find it all exhilarating. For 13.5 year old Karl, on the other hand, the snow has been rather difficult as he struggles to maintain footing and to go in and out the dog doors. Last week, Karl, following a very generous offer from Jennifer Fry, went to live with Jennifer in her home in Columbus. He will stay in Columbus through the winter at least, sharing lap time with Jennifer's two standard longs who are 12 year old Griffin and 3 year old Gretel (half-sister to Seiko). Jennifer says all three dogs went to her parents home today where Karl received a present - a canister of his favorite of all balls - raquetballs. He then basically demanded that they roll a ball for him for the next hour and a half but he was humorous about it and they obliged. After dinner they left to drive home and Karl was asleep as soon as he hit the seat cushion. He is thriving with all the extra attention from Jennifer. I am grateful to Jennifer. Thank you.

12-21   Sonic is doing "great"

Mike took this photo while Sonic slept in his truck. By 4 months of age, Sonic and her sisters had already traveled over 1200 miles by car. They are old hands at rockin' down the highway!

Sonic explores her new yard where, on this day, southern Michigan has less snow than southern Ohio. Mike is happy that she slept in her crate all night.

12-20   Sonic goes to new home in Michigan

Sonic, 16 weeks tomorrow, met Mike Suchodolski today and they liked each other right away. Mike, an avid deer hunter, was looking for a dog to track deer and be a great every day companion. He lost his 13 year old English Setter bitch this summer and friends of his have setters so the idea of a dachshund with a setter-type coat really appealed to Mike. Many thanks to Jolanta Jeanneney for referring Mike to me. Mike is new to Sonic and dachshunds are new to Mike but they sure seemed to take to each other.

May you enjoy many, many adventures together.

12-13   Day 2, Dachshunds at the AKC Agility Invitational

Round Three  was an Excellent Jumpers class.

Snoopy and Cheryl scored 100 points and ran in 37.80. After three rounds, they were ranked 17!

Mandy and Jamie scored 100 points in 42.00 seconds and were ranked 19!

Nutmeg and Maxine scored 100 points, ran the course in 33.88 seconds, and were ranked 36. Her great speed actually made Nutmeg the fastest dachshund in each round - and 18th fastest of all 8" dogs in this round - but she only moved up from 44th to 36th. You can see that the *one* quick mistake Nutmeg made yesterday was very costly. At this level of competition, only perfect scores are good scores.

Unfortunately, Bubbles and Denny lost five points in Round Three for a score of 95. Their time was 43.06 and their cumulative rank was 40.

I'm sounding like a broken record but I'm happy to point out that all four dachshunds ranked higher than more than half of the dogs in this class! Way to go!

Round Four was a hybrid Excellent Standard x Excellent Jumpers course.

Snoopy and Cheryl scored 100 points in 41.30 seconds for a cumulative rank of 12!

Mandy and Jamie scored 100 points in 40.56 seconds and ranked 13!

Bubbles and Denny scored 100 points in 41.52 and ranked 31.

And dear Nutmeg scored a big fat zero.

Here is Maxine's report. "We were waiting outside the ring to go in and Nutmeg was really pumped. She saw the flash of a camera from someone outside the ring who was taking pictures. She became very focused on that light. They'd made announcements asking people not to take pictures but this man was doing it anyway. Nutmeg really has a thing for flashes of light. When she was young, I'd shine a laser light on the wall playing with her and she'd go crazy trying to catch the light. Now she is obsessed with moving and flashing lights. I saw her looking where the camera had flashed and I thought oh no I'm doomed. Sure enough, we went into the ring, she jumped the first two jumps and then went right over to where the light had come from. I called her and called her but she was focused on where she'd seen the light and I couldn't get her back. I was so mad. Finally, I got her and we left the ring. Do you want a dog?"

She was kidding. I couldn't pry Nutmeg away from Maxine if I used dynamite.

But if I used a laser light...

Round Five, The Final

Snoopy was one of 11 dogs to compete in this fifth and final round. She was the only dachshund because only one dog of each breed is allowed into the finals. Just seven of the 11 dogs scored 100 points to Qualify in Round Five and remain in contention for one of the four placements. Unfortunately, Snoopy wasn't one of them but all of the dachshunds and their handlers deserve enthusiastic applause!

Congratulations to Cheryl Holman and Snoopy for making it to the finals! And Congratulations to Jamie Sexton and Mandy, Deneice Van Hook and Bubbles, and Maxine Brinker and Nutmeg!

All of you represented our breed very, very well. You made us proud!

Postscript

Maxine has said that she will never play with a laser light toy with her dogs again! She isn't the only one. Many more dog owners have become aware that the 'hunting' of laser lights can turn from fun to fanatical. You can read one cautionary post on the terrier.com website.

12-12   Nutmeg has "Awesome" run at Long Beach

  • MACH Nutmeg v Dorndorf L RN

Nutmeg and owner/handler Maxine Brinker of Illinois were one of the four teams that represented dachshunds at the prestigious AKC Agility Invitational this weekend in Long Beach, California.

The top five dogs in each breed are invited to the Invitational.

The annual competition got underway today as nearly 500 dogs ran the first and second of four rounds that will determine who advances to the finals on Sunday evening.

Round One was an Excellent Jumpers class.

Nutmeg scored 100 points and ran the course in 34.42 seconds, ranking 30th of the 91 small dogs competing at the 8 inch jump height.

Miniature longhair bitch Mandy and owner/handler Jamie Sexton of Tennessee ranked 37th with 100 points and course time of 35.61.

Standard longhair bitch Bubbles and owner/handler Deneice Van Hook, also of Illinois, ranked 41st with 100 points and course time of 36.28.

Standard longhair bitch Snoopy and owner/handler Cheryl Holman of Ohio ranked 45th with 100 points and course time of 37.36.

Thus, all four dachshunds finished in the top half of their class!

Round Two was an Excellent Standard class.

Mandy and Jamie Sexton scored 100 points and ran the course in 46.36 for a cumulative ranking (Round One + Round Two) of 21.

Bubbles and Deneice Van Hook scored 100 points and their course time of 48.12 found them ranked 25.

Just behind were Snoopy and Cheryl Holman with 100 points and course time of 47.48 for cumulative rank of 26.

Unfortunately, Nutmeg, who ran the course in a very fast time of 44.78, back-jumped one jump for a less than perfect score of 95, and ended the day ranked 44.

Again, all four dachshunds finished in the top half of their class! Congratulations on an Excellent day!

12-6   Puppy Tracking Update

Sonic and Seiko's track this evening was the second one this week (instead of the four tracks as usual). The first one was on Friday when we worked 275 yards in the dark. Today's track was 305 yards which we ran at nearly dark.

The track started by the birdhouse pole

50 yards to the pear tree, open left turn

65 yards to the woodsline, open right turn

65 yards to the big oak, right angle turn

50 yards toward the distant tree, open right turn

40 yards up to the crest of the field to another open right turn

35 yards to the hunk of meat at the end

Obviously, we practiced turns tonight!

But we also worked on distractions. I'd bought a Stanley space heater and had the 14"x 14" or so square black & yellow box as well as the clear plastic bag and two large styrofoam pieces it had been packed in. I put the box, the bag and the styrofoams at four different turns opposite the directions that the track went. I wanted the puppies to see strange things on the ground that they needed to track up to and work around. I also wanted their curiosity to entice them off the turns just enough so they could practice getting right back to the checks.

Seiko's attention was arrested by the bag near the pear tree as she temporarily considered what it could be. Sonic gave two barks at the box under the oak tree and waited to see if it would move. Night had fallen and I knew that it looked strange to her. It looked strange to me! I stood quietly and let them think things over for themselves. They pretty quickly decided meat was waiting for them out yonder and they'd better get themselves to it!

Sonic

Seiko

They did some outstanding work. I have been very pleased with our tracking sessions!

12-6   Oslo Does It Again!

  • FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf

Stan Knoll's Oslo is called back 3rd and places 3rd of 24 Field Champions at the Dallas-Fort Worth field trial as they finish up a third straight year amongst the top of the Top Dogs! Congratulations to both of you on your remarkable ability and consistency!

12-6   Double Qs #24 and #25 for Nutmeg!

  • MACH Nutmeg v Dorndorf L RN

Another wonderful weekend for Maxine Brinker and Nutmeg as they once more qualify with perfect scores in both Excellent B classes each day! Wowee, you two, congratulations!

12-5   Oslo Places in Large Class at Dallas-Fort Worth!

  • FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf

Oslo is called back 3rd and finishes 4th of 27 Field Champions at the DFWDC field trial in Ladonia, Texas! Congratulations to Stan Knoll and Oslo!

12-5   FCI: Send Trimmed Longhairs Out of the Ring!

An FCI ruling  came out in late October telling judges not to judge longhairs whose neck hair has been clipped or trimmed!

I would love for such a ruling to come from AKC via DCA, too, but it will never happen. We all like to groom too much.

I believe US dachshund exhibitors began grooming the necks of longhaired dachshunds because many of the top dogs were being shown by professionals - who also showed dogs from the sporting group. Trimming the necks of the setters and spaniels as they did, professional handlers decided longhaired dachshunds would also look neater trimmed up and give them an edge. Unfortunately, "neatening" became an all-out assault on neck hair to the point that many exhibitors today use clippers. The use of clippers on longhaired dachshunds was virtually unheard of 20 years ago.

It has never been clear to me why the neck hair of the longhaired dachshund, teckel, or badger dog, is thinned, scissored, or clippered for the show ring, other than "everyone does it."  Our own AKC Standard by which our dogs are supposed to be judged states, "The sleek, glistening, often slightly wavy hair is longer under the neck..."

Heavy grooming certainly does not make our dogs better dachshunds. I am glad that the VDH sees the fallacy of breeding for hair in the whelping box, then cutting it off for the show ring!

Many thanks to Marie Gadolin of Sweden for making me aware of this.

12-4  Music Page Deleted

I checked on the You Tube links on my Music Links page and found one-third of them no longer available. It was fun while it lasted but I have deleted that page.

12-3    Sage asleep with Disco

Sage is pictured with Disco whose registered name is CH Bar-Bax Life's A Dance AX OAJ. He is owned by MACH cocker spaniel exhibitor Becky Cembrowicz who frequently travels to trials with Maxine Brinker.

12-2   Dog Food Analysis

This is a link to an excellent site with evaluations and ratings of dog foods. I've emailed it to some people in the past month and given it to a coworker. Thought I'd post it here.

12-1   Nutmeg's Weekend Stats

  • MACH Nutmeg v Dorndorf L RN

Maxine Brinker forwarded me the report being sent to AKC for Nutmeg from this weekend's agility trials. It shows just how terrific their performances were!

 27-Nov-2009
  JWW-EXB-REG - 8 Inch - Judge: David Hirsch
  Distance: 142 yards - SCT: 44 seconds
  Score: 100(Q) - Time: 32.22 seconds  - Mach Pts: 11

 28-Nov-2009
  JWW-EXB-REG - 8 Inch - Judge: Tom Slattery
  Distance: 137 yards - SCT: 42 seconds
  Score: 100(Q) - Time: 31.38 seconds  - Mach Pts: 10

  STD-EXB-REG - 8 Inch - Judge: David Hirsch
  Distance: 177 yards - SCT: 74 seconds
  Score: 100(Q) - Time: 59.80 seconds  - Mach Pts: 14

 29-Nov-2009
  JWW-EXB-REG - 8 Inch - Judge: David Hirsch
  Distance: 152 yards - SCT: 47 seconds
  Score: 100(Q) - Time: 35.96 seconds  - Mach Pts: 11

  STD-EXB-REG - 8 Inch - Judge: Tom Slattery
  Distance: 162 yards - SCT: 69 seconds
  Score: 100(Q) - Time: 51.06 seconds - 4th place - Mach Pts: 17

Nutmeg scored 100 out of 100 points to qualify in five of the six classes she ran in. (Only the qualifying runs are reported.) For every class in which she qualified, Nutmeg  earned one MACH point for every second under Standard Course Time (SCT) that she ran. You can see the SCTs and Nutmeg's times above. So she qualified in five Excellent B classes in three days, averaged more than 12 seconds under STC, earned two Double Qs and a 4th place, and accumulated another 63 MACH points!

This was in competition with a variety of breeds of dogs measuring under 11" at the shoulders. This kind of accuracy, speed, and TEAMWORK does not come easy. Maxine and Nutmeg have worked hard together for years. It is wonderful to see them enjoy this kind of success in agility which they both love to do!

11-30   A Little Longhair with Gigantic Determination!

I don't know this dog, but I'd like to meet her.

11-29   Weekly Puppy Tracking Training Update

Today, Sonic and Seiko worked their last track at 12 weeks old. It was their fourth track this week and I alternate who goes first from one track to the next. Today's line was 250 yards long with four turns and the cover changed five times between grass and tall grass. The sky was overcast and wind speed was 10 mph.

They are both confident, focused little trackers and each arrived at the end of 250 yards with verve that was a pleasure to see. I also see that they are becoming more possessive of their prize. That's fine with me as long as they don't abuse the privelege. So far, so good. Good girls!

11-29   Another Double Q This Weekend for Nutmeg!

  • MACH Nutmeg v Dorndorf L RN

Double Q means that a dog has qualified in both the Excellent B Standard and Excellent B Jumpers with Weaves classes at the same agility trial. Today, Nutmeg double qualifies for the second day in a row AND places 4th in the Standard class! This, at AKC all-breed trials hosted by the Illiana Collie Fanciers club at the Hallmark Sports Club in Merrillville, Indiana. Congratulations to Maxine and Nutmeg on Double Q #23!

11-28   New Photos of the Puppies!

I have put pictures of Sonic and Seiko on the Puppies page .

11-28   Double Q #22 for MACH Nutmeg!

Congratulations to Maxine Brinker of Illinois and Master Agility Champion Nutmeg!

11-24   Photo of Small Dog Jump Height in FCI Agility

Thought I'd post a photo which clearly depicts the 14" jump height for dachshunds in all the many FCI countries. Here in AKC agility, the owners of dachshunds (and all dogs under 11" at the withers) choose between jumping their dogs 8" or 4"! This is wire dachs SAgCh SVCh Friskus Smulan's Garbo. She weighs 16 pounds and is a beloved multi-tasker for her owner Mari Edman of Sweden. Besides competing in Obedience and Freestyle, Garbo is a blood tracking Champion and an agility Champion in trials where the Dachshunds and Papillons compete against the Shelties and Border Terriers.

11-23   Finnish Longhair Best in Italian Blood Tracking Test!

Longhair breeder Pauliina Sjöholm of Kennel Badamtam's in Finland sent a happy message to her friend Marie Gadolin today. Pauliina has lent her five years old standard red male Badamtam's Up To Speed to a hunter in Italy for the season. Last month, the hunter sent a photo of "Spede" with a wild boar after a successful boar hunt. Today, Riccardo emailed news about Spede's performance in a blood tracking test on Saturday:

"Goodmorning Pauliina, Please find enclosed Spede's CAC won on Saturday on blood track, First Absolute with 100/100 Points. Please note that Spede was judged by Mr. Antonio Palladini. Mr. Palladini is the President of the Italian Dachshund Club and a very well known judge of field tests for Dachshunds, he judges many field tests for dachshunds in Germany. He also breeds Wirehaired dachshunds with the affix Val Vezzeno.

Saturday there were 22 Dachshunds, Spede the only Longhaired one. Spede had a perfect performance, even considering that when we were quite at the end of the blood-track, in the woods, (you can see that the woods are difficult in the picture), we met "face by face" two free wild boars!!!

Having seen them, Spede gave me a quick look and, without any bark, restarted to put his nose on the track, till a successful end!!! The Judge said that Spede's behaviour shows clearly a "professional security" on blood track, even if on the track there was live wild boars. Note also that in this day only ONE CAC was given - Spede's one!!!

Are you happy? Best Regards, Riccardo & Spede"

Wow! That is awesome news! Congratulations to Spede, Riccardo, and Pauliina! Well done!

11-22   Babe Wins This Time and Oslo is Second!

At today's trial in Sealy, Texas, Babe is called back 2nd and Wins the class of 6 FCB, handled by Laura Knoll for Tina Knoll. And Oslo,  owned and handled by Stan Knoll, is back 2nd to his first series bracemate and that's the way they finish in the class of 7 FCD. The total entry today was 40. Congratulations to the Knolls on another winning weekend! Oh yes, and Stan said he bought one raffle ticket hoping to win one particular raffle item. And he did win it - a bag of stress balls.   :  )

11-22   Puppies Nail 150 Yards Track

I have laid tracks for Sonic and Seiko an average of four times a week since I brought them to Ohio on October 25. I have been increasing track length by small increments, today's 150 yards track was the longest so far. It had a right angle turn, an open turn, and three changes of cover from short grass to tall grass to woods. Last night's track was 135 yards with two cover changes, all in a straight line. They've been working turns right along but I like to throw in a long straight-line track once in awhile to help teach them patience. Turns are fun for pups while a long line in one direction requires a little more sticktoittiveness. This also helps build confidence as puppies tend to make checks for themselves; straight tracks encourage them to keep going ahead to stay the course. Both of these girls are highly motivated to track! They are by FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf x DC Nadja v Dorndorf L SE and they will be 12 weeks old tomorrow.

11-22   Oslo is Absolute Winner!

Stan Knoll's Oslo is awarded Absolute Winner this morning to complete yesterday's field trial which had an entry of 64 dachshunds! Congratulations to Stan and Oslo!

11-21   Winning News from Sealy, Texas!

  • FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf L
  • FC Bob's Babe von Knobydox

Oslo, owned and handled by Stan Knoll, is called back High and Wins the class of 9 Field Champion Dogs and then wins Best Field Champion! Nadja's daughter Babe, owned by Tina Knoll and handled by Laura Knoll, is called back 4th and finishes 2nd of 7 Field Champion Bitches! Congratulations to the Knolls!

This was at the field trial of the Bayou Dachshund Club of New Orleans. It might appear that the entry was unusually small but there were 16 Open Dogs and 32 Open Bitches! Unfortunately, it was discovered that coyotes have decimated the rabbit population and they had difficulty finishing the classes. Oslo won the brace for Best Field Champion at a late hour, Absolute Winner for today's trial will be decided tomorrow morning.

11-19   Dog Show People Victimized

I briefly hesitated to post this link on this website but everyone who travels with dogs needs to read this. Furthermore, everyone who owns dogs needs to be aware of what the radical animal rights agendas are slowly but surely accomplishing in this country. Do some googling and you wll find out what groups like HSUS and PETA are really after - besides your money. They are not interested in the welfare of animals. And they sure are not interested in the welfare of the people who own them - us. This is but one skirmish in an ever increasing number of battles being fought against animal owners. Ignorance, silence and apathy are not the answers.

11-18   DCA Photos posted on Swedish website!

This morning, I received a message from Marie Gadolin, standard longhaired dachshund breeder in Sweden. Marie is the breeder from whom I imported Hound's Kashmir in 2002, the father of the Dorndorf O litter. Marie and her friend and miniature longhaired breeder Charlotte "Lottie" Jacobsson, also from Sweden, were two of the several overseas visitors to the Dachshund Club of America Nationals in October this year.

Marie and Lottie have written an article about DCA for the Swedish Kennel Club. I believe they are also sending it to the Swedish Dachshund Club. This morning, Marie posted the article on her website and sent me the link.

Marie wrote, "It’s in Swedish, obviously, but you will hopefully enjoy the photos. Spread the link to friends if you like!"

Wow! The photos are wonderful! I am enjoying them very much!

Thank you, Marie and Lottie!

10-18   Nutmeg finishes 12th at Dock Diving Nationals!

  • MACH Nutmeg v Dorndorf L MX MXJ RN OAC NCC EJC TN-N

Nutmeg, owned by Maxine Brinker of Illinois, finishes 12th in the Top 20 all-breed small dogs at the 2009 Cabela's National DockDogs® Championships!

Presented by Royal Canin and Steadfast, this National Championship event was held at the Kings Island Resort and Conference Center in Mason, Ohio. People came from as far away as California, Oregon, Texas, and Canada. Half of the small dogs class, (creatively called Lap Dogs), were Novice titled like Nutmeg and only one Novice placed higher than Nutmeg. It was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Black Betty, owned by a friend of Maxine's who is also from Illinois, and she finished 10th.

Nutmeg's jumps measured 4.08 and 5.10 feet. As some measure of perspective, the dog who finished 8th in the all-breed Novice Finals was a Chesapeake Bay Retriever with jumps of 8.05 and 8.04.

Nutmeg has been a great ambassador for our breed at these events where the Labs, Malinois, Chessies, and Jack Russells reign. Participants sometimes voice surprise, disbelief even, to see a dachshund come onto the dock! Even a few who know Nutmeg thought it might be too cold for her today. The air temperature has been unusually cold for October in Ohio and the water temperature was 37°. Nutmeg didn't seem to notice. She enjoyed herself as usual. Or, maybe she noticed just a little. She didn't make the dog wrangler come into the water and bring her out as she has been known to do in the past!

Following is a quote from DockDogs Admin in a press release about the event: "For Sam Willmering, DockDogs Announcer, his favorite moment of the weekend took place during the Lap Dog Final. 'To watch these little dogs fly off the dock and retrieve a toy, sometimes twice their size, was both fun and exciting for the participants and audience.' Sam was right, those little dogs have more heart than some dogs twice their size."

Congratulations, Maxine and Nutmeg!

10-3   Kurbis gets his first agility leg today!

  • Brass Pax von Dorndorf

Kurbis, young son of Nexus and Olive, scores a 95 for 2nd place in Novice B Standard at the agility trial in Midland, Michigan! Kurbis, turned 15 months yesterday, is owned and handled by Ashley Kala who writes:

"I'll be brief because I have to get back to my studying for a Monday test, but Kurbis got is first Q today!!! He scored a 95 in the Novice standard class only getting one refusal. The crowd LOVED him...

He also did very well in his JWW class, but his handler didn't block the entrance to the tunnel on a very tricky turn so he thought it best to go through it again! (oops) He did great, got LOTS of compliments. An altogether great day as Merlin [Australian Shepherd also owned and handled by Ashley] finished his Novice Agility title and also won the Novice FAST class at 24" over six other dogs."

Congratulations to Ashley, Merlin, and Kurbis!

9-15   My Luke is gone

CH Walmar's Luke v Dorndorf L

           11-5-97  -  9-15-09

Luke died very suddenly, very unexpectedly, this morning.

When I'd gone into the kennel to get Marta, Luke was his usual happy and healthy self. 35 minutes later, I arrived home after taking Kasi and Marta a couple of miles to a neighbor's grooming shop to bathe, and found Luke lying dead. He appeared so normal that my first thought was that he was sleeping. Tragically, I discovered that he was not. To find him like this was shocking to me.

The postmortem revealed that his pericardium was full of blood. What was probably a tumor had bled out around his heart. The vet said that he most likely died instantly.

Luke did not suffer and for that I am most grateful.

He had never been sick a day in his life.

Good-bye to the unfailingly happiest dog I have ever lived with.

Luke, you were a pleasure.

I am so thankful that you were a part of my life and that I have your children and grandchildren.

9-14   Babe encores as Best Field Champion Bitch!

  • FC Bob's Babe von Knobydox

Babe again wins the class of 20 FCB in Michigan - after being called back High for the third consecutive day!

Congratulations to Stan & Tina Knoll!

9-13   Babe is Absolute Winner in Michigan!

  • FC Bob's Babe von Knobydox

Babe, called back High for the second day in a row, wins the Field Champion Bitch class of 20 and is awarded Absolute Winner of 69 dachshunds at the Central Ohio Dachshund Club field trial in Addison, Michigan. Congratulations to owner Tina Knoll and handler Stan Knoll!

9-12   Owl qualifies in his first agility trial!

  • FC Alpine Owl von Dorndorf TD SchwhK SchwhKF Wa-T BHP-G LH

Owl competes in AKC agility and is 1st in Novice A Jumpers with Weaves with a score of 91! It was the first agility trial for both of us and we enjoyed it very much!

It was difficult to decide between the field trials in Michigan and agility! But this agility trial weekend  was close to home and I wanted to get one under our belts before competing in agility at the DCA Nationals next month. It was fun!

9-12   Babe back High, finishes 2nd!

  • FC Bob's Babe von Knobydox

Babe is called High for second series and places 2nd in the class of 24 Field Champion Bitches at the Wolverine Dachshund Club field trial in Addison, Michigan. Congratulations to the Knolls!

9-11   Oslo places 2nd of 17 Field Champion Dogs!

  • FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf

Oslo turns in another solid performance at the Central Ohio Dachshund Club field trial in Addison, Michigan today. Congratulations to Stan Knoll!

9-6   Nutmeg does it - is now Master Agility Champion!

  • MACH Nutmeg v Dorndorf L MX MXJ RN OAC NCC EJC TN-N

For the second time this weekend, Nutmeg earns perfect scores and qualifies in both of the Excellent B classes in Kentucky! Having more than enough of the requisite 750 points, today's "Double Q #20" earns Nutmeg the coveted title Master Agility Champion! She is just the 10th dachshund to MACH since AKC initiated the Master Agility Champion program on February 1, 1999! (Maxine also owned and handled the first MACH dachshund  .) WOW!

From the Regulations for Agility Trials: "To obtain the MASTER AGILITY CHAMPION title or "MACH" a dog must exhibit superior performance on the Agility course. Speed and consistency are the two major qualities denoting "superior performance" and therefore they are the basis for the MASTER AGILITY CHAMPIONSHIP program.

Congratulations to Maxine and Nutmeg! Great going as exhibitors of dachshund superiority on the Agility course!

9-5   MACH Double Q #19 for Nutmeg!

Go, Nutmeg, GO!

8-31   Nadja whelps three female puppies!

Good girl and thank you, Nadja!

In order of birth: "Sonic", the largest and lightest, was born in the van in front of a Sonic drive-in. "Hooptie", the smallest and darkest, was also born in the red van which the Knoll family calls Hooptie Do. "Fiona", the medium pup in size and color was born at home and named after Princess Fiona in the Shrek movies.

You can see photos and follow progress on the puppy blog set up by Laura and Tina Knoll.

8-26   Nadja is carrying three puppies!

Three puppies are seen on x-ray today! Nadja is feeling good, eating well, and becoming larger every day. By this time next week, she will be a mother for the third time. Her first litter was one female, FC Anika von Knobydox, who tragically died young from plant poisoning. Her second litter was two females, FC Bob's Babe von Knobydox owned by Tina Knoll, and FC Ray Bob's Gretel von Knobydox JE owned by Jennifer Fry. (All three puppies were sired by DC Ray Bob von Knobydox CGC JE VC owned by Cathy and Brian Gunn of Texas.) As I need a young female, I have very high hopes that Nadja and Oslo will produce at least one female again this time.

8-17   Nadja is pregnant!

A phone call from Stan and Tina Knoll confirms what they have thought. This evening they feel the movement of puppies. This is a wonderfully exciting development for all of us!

Knowing that I was searching for the right bitch to carry on my breeding program, Tina had offered to lease Nadja to me after she came in heat in June. The lease, which extends through October 30, will make me the breeder of record and this a Dorndorf litter though pups will be whelped and weaned in Mississippi. Enormous thanks to Tina and all of the Knoll family for their awesome generosity in making this litter possible for me!

8-14   Might Nadja be pregnant?

  • DC Nadja v Dorndorf L SE

Stan Knoll calls me at work tonight to say Nadja really looks like she's carrying puppies. "She looks more pregnant now than she did when she was pregnant!" Nadja was mated to FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf in June but their vet who palpated her later said he did not feel any fetuses. After weeks of thinking that Nadja is not pregnant, I have to say I am skeptical. "Do you feel any movement?" "No, but I tell you she looks pregnant!"

7-26   MACH Double Q #18 for Nutmeg!

7-25   MACH Double Q #17 for Nutmeg!

6-28   MACH Double Q #16 for Nutmeg!

6-27   MACH Double Q #15 for Nutmeg!

Owned and handled by Maxine Brinker, Nutmeg qualifies in both Excellent B agility classes today for the 15th time! Five more Double Qs to go for the title Master Agility Champion!

6-13   Nutmeg's First Companion Dog (CD) leg!

  • Nutmeg v Dorndorf L MX MXJ RN OAC NCC EJC TN-N

Nutmeg takes 1st Place with a score of 192 in Novice B obedience today! Owner Maxine Brinker writes, "If I worked with her more, I know she would do better but that agility gets in the way!"

5-31   Pie receives Vorzuglich (Excellent) conformation rating!

  • FC Dackeldorf American Pie SL TD

Owl's daughter Pie, bred and owned by Julie & Christian Stock, is evaluated according to FCI Standard 148 (Teckel) and receives a V rating at the North American Teckel Club zuchtschau in Rockaway, New Jersey. Zuchtschau judge was Madame Agnès de France, President of the French Dachshund Club.

5-30   Owl passes 1000 meter Schweiss (blood) test!

  • FC Alpine Owl von Dorndorf TD SchwHK SchwKF Wa-T BHP-G LH

Owl becomes the first longhair (and roughly the fifth dachshund) to pass the DTK Schweiss (bloodtracking) test in North America! The test line was made with 0.25 liter of blood dripped over 1000 meters on the afternoon of the previous day in game-rich woods in New Jersey! So last fall, Owl passed the 1000 meter blood tracking test made with hoofed tracking shoes (SchwKF) and today he passes the 1000 meter test made without tracking shoes (SchwHK)! Judges were Agnes de France from France, Teddy Moritz, and Andy Bensing.

5-23   Nadja earns her first Master Earthdog leg!

  • DC Nadja v Dorndorf L SE

Owned by Tina Knoll and handled by Stan Knoll, Nadja qualifies in the Master Earthdog class at the Badger earthdog tests in Roscoe, Illinois under judge Bob Laberge!

5-17   Nutmeg achieves Double Q #14 in MACH quest!

  • Nutmeg v Dorndorf L MX MXJ RN OAC NCC EJC TN-N

Nutmeg and her owner/handler Maxine Brinker are closing in on the crowning achievement of AKC agilty, Master Agility Champion! In order to acquire the title, a dog must achieve a minimum of 750 championship points and 20 double qualifying scores obtained from the Excellent B Standard Agility class and the Excellent B Jumpers With Weaves class. Nutmeg has more than the necessary 750 points and she and Maxine are in diligent pursuit of the required double qualifying scores. In summary, this means they have to qualify in both Excellent B classes at 20 trials and today they did it for the 14th time!

4-8   Happy 16th Birthday!

  • MACH Jackie Brink v Dorndorf L CDX TD

Ginger, owned and loved by Maxine Brinker of Illinois, is 16 years old today! These two were a marvelous team in agility competition for years. They culminated Ginger's agility career on July 28, 2001 when Ginger became the first dachshund ever to earn the AKC title Master Agility Champion or MACH.

I wrote an article  about their astounding achievement which was published in the DCA magazine. I say "astounding" because many people at that time, dachshund people included, believed the MACH title was out of the reach of dachshunds.

3-22   Oslo is Absolute Winner of 93!

  • FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf

Oslo, owned and handled by Stan Knoll of Mississippi, is 1st of 17 Field Champion Dogs, then goes Absolute at the Dachshund Club of Metropolitan Atlanta field trial!

3-21   Dachshund Club of Metropolitan Atlanta

Oslo is owned and handled by Stan Knoll and Gretel is owned by Jennifer Fry and was handled by Laura Knoll.

3-14   Dorndorf littermates win both FC classes and Absolute!

  • FC Annie Ochre von Dorndorf
  • FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf

At the Dachshund Club of St Louis field trial, Laura Knoll's Ochre is best of 16 Field Champion Bitches, Stan Knoll's Oslo wins the class of 15 Field Champion Dogs, and Ochre is Absolute Winner in an entry of 66 dachshunds!

2-22   Nexus and Owl pass the Fox Test at the F3 Hunting Dog Workshop!

  • FC Nexus v Dorndorf L TD JE RN VC Wa-T BHP-G LH
  • FC Alpine Owl von Dorndorf TD SchwKF Wa-T BHP-G LH

Nexus and Owl are two of the five dogs who pass the very first F3 test on fox for dachshunds and terriers! See February Photo of the Month  for a bit more about this test.

2-8   Oslo is Absolute Winner of 95!
  • FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf
  • FC Bob's Babe von Knobydox

On the second day of Dallas-Fort Worth, Oslo is called back High of 22 Field Champion Dogs, wins the class, and goes Absolute! Way to go Oslo and Stan!

Babe places 3rd of 17 Field Champion Bitches for owner Tina Knoll!

2-7   Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Club field trial
  • FC Bob's Babe von Knobydox
  • DC Nadja v Dorndorf L SE
  • FC Annie Ochre von Dorndorf

Babe places 2nd and her mother Nadja is 4th in the class of 20 Field Champion Bitches! Ochre was also one of the six called back in this class, so these three bitches made up half the second series! Babe and Nadja are owned by Tina Knoll, Ochre is owned by Laura Knoll.

And I want to mention that there were 111 dachshunds entered in this field trial. Wow!

2-3   2008 Tribute Book now available online

For the January, 2008 DCA National Field Events, Judy Gallamore of Texas wanted to do a very special catalog.  She asked Lois Ballard of Wisconsin to help her collect photos and information on the top Field Trial Dachshunds in history as well as dachshunds that had excelled in AKC Tracking.  Between the two of them, they put together an excellent publication.

The original catalogs sold out quickly in 2008. Lois condensed the tributes into a booklet that today she has very generously made available online free of charge. She recommends downloading it directly to your computer instead of opening it on site, as it is a large file.

This was a big project that required considerable initiative, time, and effort. Many, many thanks to Judy and Lois for a job well done!

2-1   Electric power is back on this morning after
  • 4 Days
  • 1 hour
  • 43 minutes
Air temperatures were below and well-below freezing the entire time and for one memorable period of 11 hours were in single digits down to 0°.

The world is a different place when everything is cold and dark and the only important thing is trying to be warm. There were half a dozen things I was super glad I had. 1. Lots and lots of clean dog bedding and blankets for stuffing in and all around the crates so the dogs' body heat could be retained  2. My battery operated Coleman lantern  3. Sterno to heat water  4. Handwarmers, those little heat-generating packets stuffed into gloves  5. Battery clock  6. An excellent novel ("By Order of the President", author W.E.B. Griffin).

My THANKS to the American Electric Power men who worked in tough conditions for hours Saturday night and Sunday morning to restore electric service here. They'd been at it for days already and went on to other customers with their chainsaws, ropes, and splicing equipment when their trucks pulled out.

Having witnessed so many abuses of the (much maligned) 'system', my faith in the American work ethic had become somewhat jaded. The AEP guys restored that, too.
