December

This pair of dachshunds graces a card that was postmarked Dec 24 1911 in Winter Hill, Mass.

It is addressed to Miss Lucy Elliott, 34 Walton St., Woodfords, ME

"Dear Lucy, May you have a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Sincerely, Ethel"

The card carries a one cent US postage stamp. Its front side has a few dirt smudges and some stamp cancel lines show through.

The bottom right corner has a small crease, otherwise the integrity of the actual cardstock is excellent.

Winter Hill is a neigborhood located in Somerville, Massachusetts, north of Boston. The neighborhood gets its name from the 120 foot hill there. Winter Hill was the home base of notorious gangsters who were most influential in the 1960s and 1970s. 21 members of the Winter Hill Gang were indicted by federal prosecutors in 1979.

Woodfords, Maine is also a neighborhood. Its name was actually Woodsford Corner. It was part of the town of Westbrook until 1899 when Westbrook was absorbed into the city of Portland. There is a photograph of the Woodsford Corner railroad station  taken in the same year, 1911, that Lucy Elliott received this dachshund postcard from Ethel.
