The Central Ohio Dachshund Club held its first licensed field trial on Saturday, September 25, 1982. At that time, the Central Ohio and Western Pennsylvania dachshund clubs held the only field trials in the midwest, one trial annually for each club, Central Ohio in September and Western Pennsylvania in October.
Here is the article I wrote about this Central Ohio trial for the November/December CODC newsletter The Lo-Down.

Notes of Particular Interest
Paul and Cathern Essman's Jo-Jo now has 16 1/3 of the 25 points needed to become a Field Champion.
Krista Green's Amanda is 9 years 'old'.
CH Sleepytime at Wildwood ML CG CD, owned by Susan and Johnny Jones, became the fourth dog, first miniature, to qualify for the DCA Versatility Certificate by virtue of Field points earned at this trial.
Hospitality Friday night was doubly enhanced by Liane Stiles' excellent slide show program on Deer Search, Inc. Deer Search is a small, non-profit organization in NY whose members are called to the woods and fields each fall to track deer that have been wounded by hunters. Most all the tracking dogs used are dachshunds, and they have proven themselves very proficient. Our appreciative thanks to Liane.
Those of you who wanted trial pictures were able to obtain them due to the efforts of Nancy Turner, club librarian, and Dave Curtis, and Tami Lindstrum who snapped the photos. Tami learned of the trial from the Columbus Dispatch column 'Dog Notes'. She came to her first doggy event and says she enjoyed herself tremendously.
From Susan Jones' note to the club: 'Just wanted to thank your club for all the effort they put forth on the field trial. I enjoyed it very much, as did my dogs. We look forward to coming again.'See you there NEXT fall!"

You will notice some things:
There was no Field Champion class. We had no Field Champions!
It took 25 points to earn a Field Champion title.
Only 1st and 2nd places earned Field Champion points.
After the two trials in OH and PA in September and October, most participants would not see another field trial until the same two trials the following fall.
There were just five or six field trials being held each year in the entire country, the others all on the east coast and in California.
Jo-Jo, the first place Dog, and Amanda, the second place Bitch, did go on to earn Field Champion titles. I believe they were the only entries at CODC's first licensed trial who did.
It is also worth noting that it took five years of fun (1977) and sanctioned (1978-81) field trials before AKC granted permission to Central Ohio to hold its first licensed trial. Patt Nance, CODC Corresponding Secretary, requested this permission on March 16, 1982, and John V. Carroll Jr, Manager Field Trial Department, replied with approval on April 14, 1982.
These trials would not have happened without the generous advice and tremendous support of the beaglers of the Indian Springs Beagle Club in Johnstown, Ohio. We midwestern dachshund people were as ignorant about field trials as the day is long and relied totally on the beaglers to help us. I am grateful.
