January 2009
Two years ago, this original oil painting was purchased from canine artist Mary Beacon and presented to David & Cheri Faust to commemorate the life of Oscar who died in January, 2007.
This is, in large part, the letter I'd sent to Mary Beacon:
"Your painting is being purchased as a gift to the breeders/owners/handlers of FC Longtimes Oscar von Zimmer JE. "Oscar" is by far the top winning Field Champion dachshund in AKC field trial history.
Oscar has won 33 Best in Trial awards, more than twice as many as the next dachshund. Oscar has defeated 1,944 Field Champion dachshunds in competition while the three next best dachshunds have defeated just over 1000; only 14 other dachshunds are even in the 500 category.
At his most recent field trial 2.5 weeks ago, Oscar won the Field Champion class of 36, then won Best in Trial number 33 over a total entry of 77 dachshunds. At that time, Oscar had completed eight weeks of chemotherapy for prostate cancer; tragically, the tumor is still growing and that may have been Oscar's last field trial.
Oscar is a black & tan standard smooth whose Wisconsin owner has a well-known penchant for color-coordination when it comes to her dogs. Oscar wears a red collar, has a matching red leash...and sleeps on a red blanket...
Your painting will be publicly presented next year to Oscar's owners as a tribute to "Oscar - the Best of the Best"; it has been purchased by some of his greatest admirers, owners of the 'rest of the best.'
Thanks again.

The painting was framed and a parchment paper containing these words was attached to the back.
