oslo wins class and best in trial

4/28/2013

[Oslo is ABS12 FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf CA CG, owned by Stan Knoll of Mississippi.]

Called back 3rd, Oslo went on to win the class of 13 male Field Champions at the Buckeye Dachshund Club field trial. Later in the day, Oslo was Best Field Champion, then became Absolute Winner (Best in Trial) in the entry of 47 dachshunds competing on the grounds of the Hilltop Beagle Club in Cowansville, Pennsylvania!

This was Absolute Winner award number 12 for Oslo. Few dachshunds have won this many;  the only longhair with more Absolutes is Oslo's maternal grandmother FC Ilsa v Dorndorf L who had 15.

A big congratulations to Stan and Oslo! Way to go!

taya turns tale

It never fails. Every new dog teaches us new "truths."

For years, I have used the following vignette as an example of the difference, in my experience, between male and female dogs:

"Several years ago, I was mowing grass and it was hot. Under the bright sun, my male dogs sat at the kennel fence and watched my every round on the lawn tractor. Their devotion stuck out like major headlines. Where were my female dogs? They were in the kennel building, lying on the cool cement in front of a big fan!"

Today, I had a lot of (overdue) mowing and weeding to do. It was the first time I have mowed this year and I was at it for three hours. The sun was bright when I began, and it was one of the warmest days we have had this spring. Who do you think sat - alone - at the kennel fence persistently monitoring my whereabouts? Taya. The female. The three boys had all gone inside!

It was very interesting to me to see it after years of telling a different tale.

I decided to get my camera to illustrate a new conclusion. Maybe the two genders are not that different after all.

viljo 4th of 15 at badger

[Viljo is FC Cadium Aurinkosoturi, 2 years old male, bred in Finland by Tia Eskelinen, owned by Patricia Nance.]

Today, Viljo placed 4th in the class of 15 Field Champion Dogs at the Badger Dachshund Club field trial in northern Illinois. He is pictured with judges Larry Gohlke of Wisconsin and Pam Bethke of South Dakota. Larry commented on Viljo's actions in the field, "I told Pam that that's the dog I would take home. He was really using his nose to show us the line. He is wired right."

Thank you, Larry.

It is a fact that Viljo inherently has an excellent head for the basics. He is not yet getting enough done to generate more call backs and placements - but with more rabbit experience he will.

Up early this morning to pack 'em up and head 'em out (translated = traveling to field trials this weekend). This was the sight that greeted me. With the schedule I work, I do not see many sunrises. It looked like the woods were on fire! Spectacular sight!

Beagler and dachshund field trial judge Bill Dyer shared this story on Facebook last night. Bill lives in Meigs County in southern Ohio where this incredible incident took place last fall.

I googled for more information and found this link to the story on Outdoors International, with many photos.

Wow!

rattlesnake proofing - by charlotte borghardt

4/3/2013

Longtime (second generation) dachshund breeder Charlotte Borghardt of Sierra Vista, Arizona, posted this message on a dachshund forum today. It is copied here with Charlotte's permission.

Last night at our Kennel Club Board meeting, we were discussing Rattlesnake Proofing. One of the Board members related this recent story to me about a dachshund going through this training...

There is a well respected hunting dog trainer up in Phoenix who also does the rattlesnake training.... ( While I understand the need for this, I could not in good conscience do this to my dogs)... Anyway, this trainer was doing a clinic and had a defanged rattler ... each dog went through the training and obviously the shock collar worked like it was supposed to...

Then someone brought a dachshund to be trained...usually, when the dog approaches the snake and gets the shock, the dog takes off and wants to avoid the snake at all costs....

Well, the dachshund got shocked and I'm told he was so pissed at the snake that he killed it before anyone had a chance to react....I guess he was not scared off the snake but rather figured the way to not get shocked again was to kill the thing.

Dachshunds!

ps  Charlotte and her mother Edith Colaneri were the breeders of DC Teckelhof's Perfidious who was father of my Karl. They bred standard longhairs for many years before switching to miniature longs. I will add to Charlotte's comments that my conscience would be quite okay with conditioning my dogs off snakes like this if I lived in an area where I found it necessary to do so!

"Ban metal jumps now!" by Steve Schwarz

There is no reason to use these dangerous jumps anymore! Period. There are just too many opportunities for injury.
Steve Schwarz, self-proclaimed "Agility Nerd" has a blog post regarding the danger of metal jumps. Is anyone still using them??

Nexus is DCA Cover dog

[Nexus is ABS6 DC Nexus v Dorndorf L CD TD JE RN NA VC Wa-T BHP-G LH, owned by Patricia Nance]

What a nice honor that Nexus is on the cover of the Spring 2013 Dachshund Club of American magazine. This is the quarterly publication of the national breed club. Nexus made the cover by virtue of having earned titles in seven AKC venues: Field, Tracking, Earthdog, Rally, Show, Obedience, and Agility. He is the first male longhair and second longhair of either sex to do it.

I am especially gratified by the presentation of the three-page article on Nexus inside the magazine. In fact, I was so very pleased with the graphics that I called the editor to express my appreciation. KUDOS AND THANK YOUS to Lynne Dahlen, Siren, Wisconsin, for her considerable effort, not only on my behalf in this issue but for all of DCA - month after month and year after year.

The national club published the photo and article gratis and I very much appreciate that, too.

I also sent a full page ad "Goodbye to a Godsend" about Nexus' mother Marta. Lynne placed this page at the end of the article on Nexus. And I received several extra copies of the magazine. THANK YOU, Lynne, for everything!
Picture
While I was enjoying the magazine and on the phone with Lynne, Nexus' 10 month-old great-niece Taya got hold of the box that the magazines came in. Maybe Taya, too, is saying, "Great job, Lynne! You TORE it up!"
