dorndorf dachshunds at dca

I did not attend the Dachshund Club of America National events this year, most of which were held at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, Missouri. Dorndorf was wonderfully represented in the performance arena, however, as these many bulletins testify. KUDOS and my THANKS to you all! You are the BEST! ---Love, Patt

Tracking

May 9      Ochre, owned and handled by Laura Knoll, ran her Variable Surface Tracking test with excellent effort! Tina Knoll wrote: "Just to recap, they started strong then over ran the first turn. They recovered, took the first turn and Ochre was pulling like crazy, almost took the next turn. They disqualified but did all the rest just perfect with the track layer just following." VST may have a passing rate of 5-8% but I see VST / CT (Champion Tracker) in their future. This is a talented team!

May 10     Sisters Sage, owned by Maxine Brinker, and Seiko, owned by Tina Knoll and handled by Laura, were entered in the Tracking Dog Excellent test. Unfortunately, none of the three dachshunds passed. TDX tests have a passing rate between 15-20% annually; they are not a walk in the park! But they both gave it a very good go!

Earthdog

May 11     Nutmeg qualifies in Junior Earthdog for her second leg and the JE title! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Nutmeg!

May 11     Gretel qualifies in Senior Earthdog for her third leg and the SE title! Congratulations to owner Jennifer Fry, handler Laura Knoll, and Gretel!

May 11     We all had big hopes that Nadja would earn her fourth qualification in Master Earthdog for the ME title. But this time Nadja had other ideas! As does her owner Tina Knoll, we look foward to Nadja getting that fourth leg!

Nadja had great fun being naughty.

May 12     Diane Webb writes: "We did earthdog with Olive and Bossa yesterday and today.  Neither passed yesterday, but today Olive passed and earned her first Junior Earthdog leg!  She ran straight into the tunnel (just like yesterday) but this time didn't come back out.  She got to the quarry in 17 seconds and barked and whined for over 60 seconds.

Olive was the third of 30 JE dogs to run today or which 7 passed. We waited over two hours before we got her ribbon.  So Olive was tired and hot and was looking into the sun, and the award photos aren't very good.  But I am very proud of her!!"

Congratulations to Diane and Olive!

agility

May 14     Nutmeg, 11 years, qualified with a 3rd place in a class of 14 dachshunds competing in the Master Jumpers with Weaves class! Her niece Sage also qualified in the same class! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker, Nutmeg, and Sage!

May 14     Diane writes: "Olive and John had an excellent day at DCA Agility, qualifying in Novice FAST Preferred (1st place), Masters Standard Preferred (2nd Place), and Masters JWW Preferred (2nd Place).  Olive earned her third double Q and 26 points towards PACH [Preferred Agility Champion].  Once again, Olive just missed winning High In Trial; this time she was about a second behind the Standard Preferred HIT Winner.

The venue was awesome -- artificial turf over the matted floor covering the entire facility in a large, well-lit, air-conditioned facility. I've got videos of Olive which I'll post at some point.  No photographers or videographers at the trial."

Congratulations to John Willmore and Olive!

Obedience and rally

May 15     Sage qualified in Novice B Obedience debut, placing 3rd and earning the first leg of her CD! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Sage!

May 16     Nutmeg and Sage both qualified in the Advanced B Rally class with Nutmeg earning 2nd Place of the 10 dachshunds competing! Congratulations to Maxine and the Spice Girls!

May 16     Olive qualified in Rally B Excellent for the necessary third leg in the annual DCA Triathlon! Combined with her passing/qualifying performances in earthdog and agility, Olive has qualified with a chance to win the Triathlon. Whether she does will be determined by performances of other Triathlon contenders that are still to come. Congratulations to Diane Webb and Olive!

May 17     Nutmeg qualified with a 1st Place in Open A obedience for her 3rd leg and her CDX! Putting this achievement in perspective, only four dachshunds earned the CDX title in 2012. Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Nutmeg!

triathlon

May 17     John and Diane end their DCA week with Olive being one of only 4 qualifiers in the DCA Triathlon, she finished 3rd!

Congratulations Team Olive!

Way to GO, everyone!! ♥♥♥

I got a new computer today and it is now up and running! Windows 7 instead of XP, new keyboard and mouse. This CPU is so quiet that I thought it wasn't running. haha! Keyboard is great, too. Didn't really appreciate how "old" my old stuff was. NICE to be back online after a Windowsless week.  : )

heavens gates - by Laura Mei-lin Knoll

[Ochre is ABS5 FC Annie Ochre von Dorndorf, 8 years old, owned and handled by Laura Knoll of Mississippi.]

Laura created this collage of photos and posted it, and this message on Facebook today.
I can’t believe that only 5 years ago Ochre and I were standing out in the freezing rain competing for her DCA National Absolute Win. And only 2 years ago we were walking our 800 yard track earning her Tracking Dog Excellent Title. Ochre may look like just a dog to some people, but she is so much more than that. She has taught me life skills that I will use for the rest of my life. She is always there to comfort me and keep me smiling. Thanks to her breeder for giving me such a blessing and everyone who has guided me and helped me along my dachshund journey. I love my horses with all my heart, but this little dog I love to heavens gates and back. ( — with Patricia Nance and Tina Knoll.
There is nothing that stirs a breeder's heart more than knowing that he or she helped create a match made in heaven! And receiving an occasional slice of tangible evidence only adds fuel on the heart-fire.

This, however, is more than a slice - it is more like the whole kaboodle!

Thank you, dear Laura. You have been a gift to Ochre every bit as much as she has been to you.

The following was posted on BuzzFeed by Summer Anne Burton. Many thanks to Janice for sending the link. I like the photo very much!
Eva, who works as a foster mom for Badass Brooklyn Foster Dog, rescued this one-eyed dachshund mix from a high-kill shelter in Alabama. She fell in love, bringing him back to her farm in Pennsylvania and naming him Captain Morgan.

Captain was eventually adopted by an awesome couple a few months ago, and it’s been happy-ever-after since. The couple brought Captain to a Badass Brooklyn block party where he was reunited with the woman who saved his life.

As soon as he saw Eva, he jumped into her arms to say “thank you.”

the plate

It is risky sometimes to put soul-baring stuff like this on the world wide web. I have decided to do it anyway.

This past Sunday, May 5, Kurt Visniski and I judged a class of 18 Field Champion Bitches at the Wolverine Dachshund Club field trial in southern Michigan.FC Danika vom Nordlicht ME, who had a marvelous multiple-checks run in 1st Series and was called back High, prevailed over other talented contenders to win the class.

After the judging, I'd come out of the field and was standing by my car. Danika's owner and handler Cheri Faust came up to me, Danika in her arms. Cheri said that I, the owner of the first dachshund to earn 1000 lifetime points in the field, had just, by Danika's 1st place in this class, judged and awarded the first dachshund to earn 2000 lifetime points in the field. 2000 points exactly.

Cheri hugged me and we all went back into the field for the running of the last class of the day. But my mind was thinking other thoughts. Thoughts about a long ago day at a field trial in western Pennsylvania.

So we were beating brush and Larry Gohlke, breeder of Danika, asked if I knew that Danika had just reached the 2000 merit points milestone. I said yes, but nothing else. Larry made a couple more comments, reminiscing about a couple of great dogs from the past. I simply nodded and kept moving. I was still thinking about something else.

Cheri joined us in the field. The three of us beat brush for a short time before a rabbit was spotted and the next brace was called to the line. While we waited, I decided to tell them what was on my mind. It had been there for more than a few minutes. It had been there for years.

In October 2003 at the field trial of the Western Pennsylvania Dachshund Club, my super FC Ilsa v Dorndorf L became the first dachshund in field trial history to pass the 1000 merit points milestone. I said this to all who were present when the trial ribbons and prizes were awarded that evening. They were appreciative. Someone handed me a white paper plate with "1000 points!" written on it. It was a good day.

However.

I am not one to depend a lot on confirmation and accolades from others. But I felt a real sense of disappointment that Ilsa received no recognition from, at least, the community of dachshund field trialers.

I am also not one who thinks that what is important to me is necessarily important to others. However I felt there should have been more.

This was verified, I believe, when the next dog reached the 1000 points mark. It was a cause for some manner of recognition and/or celebration, as is a high-water mark in any endeavor!

Disappointments, like many feelings, are strange. They can lie buried for years and rise to the surface again in totally unexpected times and ways. Surprising to me, I actually felt some tears fall as I relayed this to Larry and Cheri. Afterward, like the catharsis that telling and tears often are, I felt free of the disappointment that had been with me for a long time.

Above it all, I was exceedingly glad and proud that one of our own had accomplished the feat of 2000 points!!

The trial went on and Danika did, too, on to Absolute Winner in a total entry of 61 dachshunds. Such a talented trailing dog she is!
During the awards presentation at this trial, I was happy and honored to be able to make the announcement of Danika's awesome accomplishment!

And when the Absolute Winner award was made to Danika, another - totally unexpected - thing happened. The prize for Absolute was the Danbury Mint porcelain collector plate "Window Seat." It features a red standard longhair with a wonderful intent expression. Cheri, who owns only smooths and wires, asked me if I would like to have it. I stammered a bit but...YES!!

On the drive home, I thought about the plate and having had, literally, a window seat to Danika's marvelous achievement.

It was two days before I realized something else. I was waking up in the morning and thinking random thoughts when it hit me.

Paper plate in 2003.

Danbury Mint plate in 2013.

Might it seem like more than a coincidence to anyone else?

In remembrance of Ilsa, I am grateful.
