Super proud of Daddy and Oslo today! Called back second in a class of 15 Field Champion Dogs, Oslo won the class, then went on to win his 14th Absolute! Thanks to the judges and all the people who put on the trial. It was a great weekend!  - Laura Knoll, MS
In the class of 8 Field Champion Bitches, Oslo's daughter Seiko had the second best run in 1st series, was High after 2nd series,  then finished in second place. Super Seiko was handled by her owner Laura Knoll.

Congratulations to Stan & Oslo, and Laura & Seiko!!

I have been saying that Seiko is owned by Tina Knoll, which she is. Today, Tina's daughter Laura wrote to me, "Seiko is actually owned by me, too. I just needed some credit on my awesome little puppy."

Yes, you do, Laura! Pleeaase accept my apology.

Seiko was called back High and Won the Field Champion Bitches class of 9 this morning.

Her father Oslo was called back second and Won the class of 11 Field Champion Dogs this afternoon.

This was at the Mission City Dachshund Club field trial in Kirbyville, Texas. Seiko is owned by Tina Knoll, and Oslo by Stan Knoll who handled both dogs today.

So in the run-offs for Absolute, guess who was Best Field Champion. Oslo's little girl Seiko!

At this trial then, Seiko was braced with and defeated the top Field Champion of 2013 (Linda Snyder's Hopi), the top Field Champion of all time (Cheri Faust's Danika), and the top Longhaired & number 5 Field Champion of all time (Stan Knoll's Oslo)! Talk about an excellent day!

Congratulations to the Knoll Family! I hope to get a photo or two to add to this post!

I did not attend the Dachshund Club of America National events this year, most of which were held at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, Missouri. Dorndorf was wonderfully represented in the performance arena, however, as these many bulletins testify. KUDOS and my THANKS to you all! You are the BEST! ---Love, Patt

Tracking

May 9      Ochre, owned and handled by Laura Knoll, ran her Variable Surface Tracking test with excellent effort! Tina Knoll wrote: "Just to recap, they started strong then over ran the first turn. They recovered, took the first turn and Ochre was pulling like crazy, almost took the next turn. They disqualified but did all the rest just perfect with the track layer just following." VST may have a passing rate of 5-8% but I see VST / CT (Champion Tracker) in their future. This is a talented team!

May 10     Sisters Sage, owned by Maxine Brinker, and Seiko, owned by Tina Knoll and handled by Laura, were entered in the Tracking Dog Excellent test. Unfortunately, none of the three dachshunds passed. TDX tests have a passing rate between 15-20% annually; they are not a walk in the park! But they both gave it a very good go!

Earthdog

May 11     Nutmeg qualifies in Junior Earthdog for her second leg and the JE title! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Nutmeg!

May 11     Gretel qualifies in Senior Earthdog for her third leg and the SE title! Congratulations to owner Jennifer Fry, handler Laura Knoll, and Gretel!

May 11     We all had big hopes that Nadja would earn her fourth qualification in Master Earthdog for the ME title. But this time Nadja had other ideas! As does her owner Tina Knoll, we look foward to Nadja getting that fourth leg!
Picture
Nadja had great fun being naughty.

May 12     Diane Webb writes: "We did earthdog with Olive and Bossa yesterday and today.  Neither passed yesterday, but today Olive passed and earned her first Junior Earthdog leg!  She ran straight into the tunnel (just like yesterday) but this time didn't come back out.  She got to the quarry in 17 seconds and barked and whined for over 60 seconds.

Olive was the third of 30 JE dogs to run today or which 7 passed. We waited over two hours before we got her ribbon.  So Olive was tired and hot and was looking into the sun, and the award photos aren't very good.  But I am very proud of her!!"

Congratulations to Diane and Olive!

agility

May 14     Nutmeg, 11 years, qualified with a 3rd place in a class of 14 dachshunds competing in the Master Jumpers with Weaves class! Her niece Sage also qualified in the same class! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker, Nutmeg, and Sage!

May 14     Diane writes: "Olive and John had an excellent day at DCA Agility, qualifying in Novice FAST Preferred (1st place), Masters Standard Preferred (2nd Place), and Masters JWW Preferred (2nd Place).  Olive earned her third double Q and 26 points towards PACH [Preferred Agility Champion].  Once again, Olive just missed winning High In Trial; this time she was about a second behind the Standard Preferred HIT Winner.

The venue was awesome -- artificial turf over the matted floor covering the entire facility in a large, well-lit, air-conditioned facility. I've got videos of Olive which I'll post at some point.  No photographers or videographers at the trial."

Congratulations to John Willmore and Olive!

Obedience and rally

May 15     Sage qualified in Novice B Obedience debut, placing 3rd and earning the first leg of her CD! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Sage!

May 16     Nutmeg and Sage both qualified in the Advanced B Rally class with Nutmeg earning 2nd Place of the 10 dachshunds competing! Congratulations to Maxine and the Spice Girls!

May 16     Olive qualified in Rally B Excellent for the necessary third leg in the annual DCA Triathlon! Combined with her passing/qualifying performances in earthdog and agility, Olive has qualified with a chance to win the Triathlon. Whether she does will be determined by performances of other Triathlon contenders that are still to come. Congratulations to Diane Webb and Olive!

May 17     Nutmeg qualified with a 1st Place in Open A obedience for her 3rd leg and her CDX! Putting this achievement in perspective, only four dachshunds earned the CDX title in 2012. Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Nutmeg!

triathlon

May 17     John and Diane end their DCA week with Olive being one of only 4 qualifiers in the DCA Triathlon, she finished 3rd!

Congratulations Team Olive!

Way to GO, everyone!! ♥♥♥

The end

Sage, the third and final female in the Dorndorf S litter was spayed yesterday. Her owner just did not want to have puppies - and that was known when she acquired Sage.

Nevertheless, knowing that Sage is spayed has not been an easy pill to swallow.

It is the end of eight continuous generations of Dorndorf bitches, or the "bottom line" on all of our pedigrees.

Our very first bitch, CH Dorndorf's Dana v Bricken, was obtained at nine months of age from a kennel in Texas in 1972.

  • Dana was the mother of

1. 1973 CH Dorndorf's Andrea L (Winners Bitch at DCA in 1974)

  • Angel was the mother of

2. 1981 CH Dorndorf's Ericka L CD TT

  • Ericka was the mother of

3. 1983 Felda v Dorndorf L CD TD TT

  • Felda was the mother of

4. 1986 DC Grissel v Dorndorf L CDX TD VC

  • Grissel was the mother of

5. 1990 ABS15 FC Ilsa v Dorndorf L

  • Ilsa was the mother of

6. 1998 ABS6 FC Marta v Dorndorf L JE LH

  • Marta is the mother of

7. 2002 DC Nadja v Dorndorf L SE CG

  • Nadja is the mother of

8. 2009 Sonic, Sage, and Seiko v Dorndorf

Nadja, owned by Stan and Tina Knoll, produced three litters numbering 1, 2, 3 puppies, all females. Of these six offspring, one is dead and four are spayed. The one remaining intact Nadja daughter is Tina Knoll's ABS3 FC Bob's Babe von Knobydox. On the distaff side, then, though not a Dorndorf bitch, it will be up to Babe to carry on. She was bred to Owl in May this year but did not become pregnant. Our plan is to try again in the spring. Wish us luck!

One thing that I have learned from all this is that it is ultimately unwise for a breeder to put all of her eggs in one basket. Yes, it worked just fine for me to have only one producing female at a time for 29 years (!) but...

Here's to Owl x Babe puppies in the spring.

Again today, it was a combined-sex Field Champion class at the Dachshund Club of St Louis field trial and a good-sized class. Good going, girls!

I will add that this is the first weekend that Seiko has run as a Field Champion!

Both dogs were handled by Laura Knoll for their owners. Congratulations to Laura, Jennifer, Tina, Gretel, and Seiko!

Jared Tucker tagged me with a good photo of Nexus and Seiko on Facebook today. The photo was taken March 16, 2010 at the F3 Workshop in North Carolina. It shows Rocky on the left, Nexus in the center, and Seiko, 5.5 months, on the right.  Thank you, Jared. I did not know this photo existed. It made me smile!

Seiko Rejoins The Knoll Family

11/11/2010

Seiko v Dorndorf L, now 14 months old, is with Laura Knoll and Jennifer Fry. They will meet up with Stan Knoll, Babe, and Oslo, who are on their way from Mississippi to Ohio to compete in the Buckeye field trials this weekend.

Seiko was the pup I chose out of the three females by FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf x DC Nadja v Dorndorf L SE. Tina Knoll had leased Nadja to me for this litter but Nadja stayed in Mississippi where the Knolls whelped and raised her three puppies. I brought the pups to Ohio in October, 2009. Sage went to live with Maxine Brinker in Ilinois, then Sonic went to Michigan with hunter Mike Suchodolski. Seiko stayed with me. I'd waited and strived a long time to obtain my next female and Seiko was just what I wanted.

However, in January of this year when Seiko was five months old, I began noticing that something was not quite right with her rear stance and movement. Her hocks looked like they were bowing out some. I watched and watched, and waited and waited, hoping this was a stage she would come out of...

It wasn't. Eventually, with some assist from orthopedic specialist Dr. Matthew Barnhart at Med Vet in Columbus, I learned more about Pes Varus than I ever wanted to know. And I realized that, although I've never seen it in my own dogs, I'd seen bowed legs like this in other dachshunds. I just hadn't known what it was.

Pes Varus is also known as Angular Hock Deformity. It is a developmental problem caused by uneven closure of the growth plate at the far (distal) end of the tibia. It often becomes noticeable when puppies are five to six months old. Here are two definitions.

"Pes Verus is a distal tibia deformity described in dachshunds and associated with asymmetric closure of the distal physis."

"Pes varus is a distal tibial deformity seen in Dachshunds. With this condition there is shortening of the medial tibia with maximum curve and rotation at the distal metaphysis."

There isn't a whole lot of information out there about Pes Varus but I learned as much as I could. I found that it is likely an autosomal recessive trait which meant that Seiko was NOT a future candidate for breeding. You can imagine how very disappointing this was.

Ironically, her excellent rear structure as a young puppy was one of the reasons I chose Seiko over her sisters. Sonic and Sage are unaffected by this condition.

Fortunately, Seiko has a mild form of it. She shows no lameness whatsoever and RUNS with the best of them. In fact, I've long said that Seiko loves to run more than any dog I've ever owned. She darts and zooms and circles in the yard as fast as she can go, whether anyone is chasing her or not!

Last month, I began to talk of finding another home for Seiko. Tina Knoll announced that she wanted her to come back to Mississippi. Tina wants to track and field trial her. Seiko displays an affinity for tracking, (she was certified by a tracking judge at nine months), and will likely display a lot of talent on rabbits.

So it is a win-win situation for everybody. Except Viljo. Seiko was his wrestling buddy. And of course I will - eventually - be on the hunt again for a female.

Seiko, you be a good girl.

Seiko Passes Gunsteadiness Test

6/19/2010

The Gunsteadiness Test was one of several North American Teckel Club events being held over four days in New Jersey. The natural den test was on Friday and blood tracks were worked yesterday. I postponed my departure from home as long as possible as Seiko is just coming out of heat, so I did not arrive in New Jersey until this morning.

Nine months old Seiko has not been exposed to close gunfire before. But she has a very steady temperament and has heard loud noises and distant shots so I thought I would see. I walked her down the road toward the little field where a number of dogs were being tested, one after the other, and Seiko did not show the slightest startle. By the time we got to the field, it was our turn. I let Seiko off lead but she was happy to just hang out with me. <g> Dogs must be 30 meters or so away from their handlers when shots are fired. So I found a rock, picked it up, and threw it. Seiko ran after the rock and was looking for it in the grass when the first live round of ammo was fired from the shotgun of the gunner who was Teddy Moritz. Seiko picked up her head and looked in the direction of the shot. Teddy fired again. Seiko stood there and looked at her. This, I am sure, will be the most effortless passing performance of Seiko's life.

It didn't require too much from me, either, to take off the lead and throw a rock! But it is not so simple for a dog that has issues with loud noise and the importance of this test cannot be overestimated. A gunshy dog cannot be useful for hunting.  Therefore, it is a DTK requirement that prior to being entered in any hunting test, a dachshund must have passed a gunsteadiness test.

Seiko Completes Certification Track

4/24/2010

Seiko, seven months old, quickly and successfully worked a regulation TD (human footstep) track laid by tracking judge Lois Ballard to become certified as ready to participate in a tracking test. Thanks to Lois for taking a few photos and sending them to me.

From the Tracking Club of Wisconsin (TCoW) website:

"A certification track is a blind track with the same requirements as a standard AKC TD test track. It will be from 440 to 500 yards in length and will have 3 to 5 turns. The track will be aged from 30 minutes to 2 hours old.

The Certification is the judge’s statement that the dog has satisfactorily performed a certification track and is ready to enter a TD test."
