dorndorf dachshunds at dca

I did not attend the Dachshund Club of America National events this year, most of which were held at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, Missouri. Dorndorf was wonderfully represented in the performance arena, however, as these many bulletins testify. KUDOS and my THANKS to you all! You are the BEST! ---Love, Patt

Tracking

May 9      Ochre, owned and handled by Laura Knoll, ran her Variable Surface Tracking test with excellent effort! Tina Knoll wrote: "Just to recap, they started strong then over ran the first turn. They recovered, took the first turn and Ochre was pulling like crazy, almost took the next turn. They disqualified but did all the rest just perfect with the track layer just following." VST may have a passing rate of 5-8% but I see VST / CT (Champion Tracker) in their future. This is a talented team!

May 10     Sisters Sage, owned by Maxine Brinker, and Seiko, owned by Tina Knoll and handled by Laura, were entered in the Tracking Dog Excellent test. Unfortunately, none of the three dachshunds passed. TDX tests have a passing rate between 15-20% annually; they are not a walk in the park! But they both gave it a very good go!

Earthdog

May 11     Nutmeg qualifies in Junior Earthdog for her second leg and the JE title! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Nutmeg!

May 11     Gretel qualifies in Senior Earthdog for her third leg and the SE title! Congratulations to owner Jennifer Fry, handler Laura Knoll, and Gretel!

May 11     We all had big hopes that Nadja would earn her fourth qualification in Master Earthdog for the ME title. But this time Nadja had other ideas! As does her owner Tina Knoll, we look foward to Nadja getting that fourth leg!

Nadja had great fun being naughty.

May 12     Diane Webb writes: "We did earthdog with Olive and Bossa yesterday and today.  Neither passed yesterday, but today Olive passed and earned her first Junior Earthdog leg!  She ran straight into the tunnel (just like yesterday) but this time didn't come back out.  She got to the quarry in 17 seconds and barked and whined for over 60 seconds.

Olive was the third of 30 JE dogs to run today or which 7 passed. We waited over two hours before we got her ribbon.  So Olive was tired and hot and was looking into the sun, and the award photos aren't very good.  But I am very proud of her!!"

Congratulations to Diane and Olive!

agility

May 14     Nutmeg, 11 years, qualified with a 3rd place in a class of 14 dachshunds competing in the Master Jumpers with Weaves class! Her niece Sage also qualified in the same class! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker, Nutmeg, and Sage!

May 14     Diane writes: "Olive and John had an excellent day at DCA Agility, qualifying in Novice FAST Preferred (1st place), Masters Standard Preferred (2nd Place), and Masters JWW Preferred (2nd Place).  Olive earned her third double Q and 26 points towards PACH [Preferred Agility Champion].  Once again, Olive just missed winning High In Trial; this time she was about a second behind the Standard Preferred HIT Winner.

The venue was awesome -- artificial turf over the matted floor covering the entire facility in a large, well-lit, air-conditioned facility. I've got videos of Olive which I'll post at some point.  No photographers or videographers at the trial."

Congratulations to John Willmore and Olive!

Obedience and rally

May 15     Sage qualified in Novice B Obedience debut, placing 3rd and earning the first leg of her CD! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Sage!

May 16     Nutmeg and Sage both qualified in the Advanced B Rally class with Nutmeg earning 2nd Place of the 10 dachshunds competing! Congratulations to Maxine and the Spice Girls!

May 16     Olive qualified in Rally B Excellent for the necessary third leg in the annual DCA Triathlon! Combined with her passing/qualifying performances in earthdog and agility, Olive has qualified with a chance to win the Triathlon. Whether she does will be determined by performances of other Triathlon contenders that are still to come. Congratulations to Diane Webb and Olive!

May 17     Nutmeg qualified with a 1st Place in Open A obedience for her 3rd leg and her CDX! Putting this achievement in perspective, only four dachshunds earned the CDX title in 2012. Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Nutmeg!

triathlon

May 17     John and Diane end their DCA week with Olive being one of only 4 qualifiers in the DCA Triathlon, she finished 3rd!

Congratulations Team Olive!

Way to GO, everyone!! ♥♥♥

leave of absence

My blogging, emailing, and Facebooking have necessarily been on hold for the past month. One reason for it was a large annual, work-related responsibility that required a lot of my time and attention. I have completed this project which is great to be able to say.

The other reason is that, on February 1, I began daily training sessions with all four dogs. I have not worked at this type of training in decades and I have been eager to revisit it for several years. But I had really been stuck on HOW? Training methodologies are important to me and things have changed a lot in the years since I was involved. Amidst the myriad of varying information available and my own often highly conflicting views, I had not been able to arrive at the HOW. Not until late last year, that is, when I bought a textbook on learning theory and behavior, ordered some DVDs that I hoped would be helpful (they were!), finally opened a set of excellent horse (yep!) training books I got at Equine Affaire a few years ago, and did some studying on the internet. All of this culminated in the training sessions that began the first of this month.

Things have really clicked (hah!) and my dogs and I are very much enjoying ourselves! But establishing the habit of daily training sessions, planning what to train (first, second, third, etc), how to train, when to train, when to go back, when to maintain, and when to move on, has required a lot of start-up brain power. I spent a good portion of my time at home devoted to this endeavor and I am so glad I did.

It is all coming to me more readily now. I have the basic training structure in place and it has become part of our day. And when I walk past the room where we have been training and see one or more of the dogs sitting there waiting and hopeful for a training session, then I know all the effort to figure out HOW has been worth it. My dogs have craved the training even more than I.

Obedience, rally, agility stats 2012

2/15/2013

There is a page on the Dog Show Scores website with a summary of statistics for 2012. Included are all-breed stats for Obedience, Rally, and Agility, broken down by Numbers Entered, Numbers Qualified, and Qualifying Rate per class. I can only imagine how much work goes into compiling and maintaining such a database!

It is interesting to see these statistics. If nothing else, it gives greater appreciation for the efforts and accomplishments of those who participate in these performance sports, especially in some of the more advanced classes.

Also interesting are the numbers showing that the 8" agility dogs have higher Qualifying rates in both Standard and Jumpers than dogs of the other five height divisions. And the 8 inchers very nearly have the highest Q rate in the FAST classes, too.

George Richards, 100, Passed Away Yesterday

George Richards was a long-time dachshund enthusiast and highly accomplished trainer. Phenomenal, really, that George did not train his first dog until he was 59, yet he and his dachshunds earned the first AKC Tracking Dog Excellent title ever awarded to any breed, multiple advanced Obedience titles, and also, when George was 98, an Obedience High in Trial!
Picture

From "History of Tracking Events" on the AKC website, "This advanced test, called Tracking Dog Excellent, was approved by the AKC in 1979 and became effective on March 1, 1980. The first TDX dog was a Dachshund, Gretel Von Bupp Murr UD, who passed the Tracking Dog Excellent Test on March 15 of that year. This dog was owned and handled by George Richards of Sun City Center, Florida."

I consider myself fortunate to have met George and his last dachshund Hummel, a longhair, at an obedience training seminar hosted by Gail Binder in Rochester, NY in 2005. George was 94 at the time and had traveled from Maryland with his son for the event. I found it inspiring to be around someone like him!

Today, I have added two articles about this amazing man on the George Richards page. One of the items, written by Tracy Freeling, contains a link to a video of a qualifying advanced Obedience performance with Hummel in 2009. George was nearly 99 years old!

I understand that Hummel is now living with George's son. May George and his dachshunds meet again.

Olive Earns Rally Excellent AND Companion Dog Titles

I will let her happy owner Diane Webb tell the story:  "I'm very proud to report that Olive earned her Rally Excellent (RE) and Novice Obedience (CD) titles today at the Shoreline Dog Fanciers Association trial in Costa Mesa CA.  I can't get the smile off my face.

The conditions were not wonderful (loud, crowded and smelly building, with clumps of dog hair wafting through) and Olive was not very sharp. But she persevered and earned an 81 and second place in Rally Excellent A.  We got off to a very rocky start but Olive settled down and finished the course with a nice backup at heel and a good Honor down.  That was Olive's third qualifying score in Rally Excellent and her RE title!

Then we waited a few hours for Novice B obedience.  I wasn't feeling very optimistic, particularly when I learned we would be between a
rather nervous Terv and a Newfoundland for group stays.  We had some problems with the individual exercises (no sit on the first halt, off to sniff a spot that nailed almost every dog on the Heel Free "Slow", and an auto finish on the recall) but also some very nice moments.  The judge told us that we were qualifying but I knew those groups were coming up.

We did some warmup long sits since Olive has a tendency to lie down on sit stays.  Those went well, but when we were lining up for the Group Stays I could tell that Olive was not happy.  The Terv was absent for stays, so we were between two Newfies.  Olive wouldn't look at me and when we got into position for the sit, Olive once again refused to sit. The judge told me to "physically sit the dachshund" and I did.  And the rest is history!  The two dogs that got up during the Long Sit were at the other end of the line and the Newfies, while gigantic, were good. Olive held her Sit, went into a Down with no problem, and held the Down. I was ecstatic when the judge called "87, the dachshund" as a qualifier!

We got our trademark 3rd place with a 176.  There were 4 qualifiers out of 14 entries with 11 dogs actually competing.  Best of all, that was Olive's third Novice obedience leg and her CD title!

We are done, done, done with all-breed group stays.  I am very grateful to Olive for doing the two all-breed stays and I'm not going to push our luck any further.  I've got a few dachshund specialty trials on my list for 2011 and we'll start working hard on Open and Utility skills.  We will also be honing Olive's rally skills for RAE.

Given that we got Olive in January, I am very pleased with what we've been able to accomplish.  Olive is 6.5 and I'm really looking forward to continuing to work with her.  Thank you, Patt -- both for suggesting that we take Olive and for giving her such good foundation skills.

Our judges today were James Ham (rally) and Sharon Ann Redmer (obedience).  I thought both were excellent, very pleasant judges.  I
also learned that you can physically put a dog into a sit or down for the stays, with a deduction.  I had seen in the rules that you could do
this for the Down but I wasn't sure about the Sit.

I'll be floating on Cloud Nine the rest of the weekend.

-- Diane and FC Autumn Olive von Dorndorf TD CD RE OA NAJ Wa-T BHP-G"

What John and Diane "have been able to accomplish" since first meeting Olive in January is CD in Obedience; RN, RA, and RE in Rally; and NA, OA, NAJ, one OAJ leg so far in Agility!

That's some kind of Awesome! Congratulations to all of you!

FC Autumn Olive von Dorndorf TD RA OA NAJ Wa-T BHP-G, owned by Diane Webb (handling) & John Willmore, earned her second Novice obedience leg today with a 185 and 3rd place at the Los Encinos Kennel Club trial in Long Beach, California! Olive was one of 7 qualifiers out of 13 entries at this all-breed trial preceding the National Obedience Invitational this weekend. Congratulations! Way to go!

Diane wrote: "After the Long Sit, the judge told me I should be really proud of my little girl, and I told her that I WAS!!

I'd be proud in any case, but watch this video of the Long Sit and you'll see why I'm REALLY PROUD of her!"
