a field trial 30 years ago

Well, this was interesting. Found some photos that I didn't know I had! They are not in the best condition but I am very happy to have them.

They are from a Central Ohio Dachshund Club field trial held in the early '80s at the Chief Tarhe Beagle Club in West Rushville, Ohio.
Picture
Field Champion winners are posed in reverse of the usual order. So left to right = NBQ thru First Place:

Cathern Essman, John Jeanneney, Syd Baker, Rick Oberstar, Don Chapman.

I am sorry that Cathern is mostly cut out of the photo. Paul and Cathern Essman were instrumental in bringing dachshund field trials to Ohio and, therefore, the midwest.

Absolute Winner:

Patt Nance, Bill Bay, Bob Chapman, Roger Humeston.

Bill Bay was President of Chief Tarhe and the only beagler in the photo. He judged for us more than once.

Nutmeg Won the Open class of 28 bitches to finish her Field Champion title at the Great Lakes trial of the Harvest Moon Classic. Judges were Cindy Yeager (left) and Patsy Leonberger.

Nutmeg, 11 years,  is owned and handled by Maxine Brinker. My apologies that the photo did not turn out better. But it goes without saying: I am very proud of you two!

Congratulations to Maxine and Nutmeg!

Laura Knoll and Ochre were participants at the well-attended tracking workshop conducted by Lois Ballard. Held at a community park in Roscoe, Illinois, it was one of the Harvest Moon events and essentially an Intro to Tracking affair. Neither Laura, Ochre TDX, or myself  are new to tracking, but we can always learn something. Especially from Lois!

Ochre was very happy to be back in harness and given some tracks to run! This made Laura happy, too. Can you tell?

Tasha and I went on our first track of the year last night. The track was about 12 hours old and there was no blood after the first couple of hundred yards. After we were convinced that she was leading us on a wild goose chase, she brought us to the deer. This was her tenth recovery out of thirteen attempts. I'm so proud of her.

- Cliff Shrader, LA
Congratulations to Cliff and Tasha!

A few months ago, I made the decision to take the summer off. Off from phone calls, off from my website, off from Facebook, even, for the most part, off from emails. Instead, I became more deeply involved with two activities that I enjoy as much or more than anything - training my wonderful dogs and becoming much more familiar with my good camera. I enjoy dog training and dog photography very, very much and it was great to have opportunity to really focus on that this summer!

It is easy to spend time on such things to the exclusion of all else!

But different seasons for different reasons. Early October brings to me a time for migrating from the pleasure, peace, and rather intense self-study of two of my favorite subjects to communicating and writing as usual. It was good to step away and it is good to step back. Today, I spent several hours giving my website a fall facelift. Subconsciously at least, I find it boring to the point of snoring to look at and work with the same web design all the time. Thankfully, design software keeps improving and making it easier and faster for me to choose and implement something different.

I hope you like the new look as much as I do! I will add more photos as I can. There are a bunch of field trials coming up. I look forward to posting news.
