I traveled 385 miles to Owensboro, Kentucky last night, stayed the night at Bill & Vicki Spencer's, and drove 385 miles back home today. Two minutes after leaving Vicki this morning, my CRV's odometer turned 295,000 miles. It's no wonder...
Nexus is a bit tired. Happy but tired. He spent most of the seven hour trip stretched out on his back in the back seat. He will get a week's worth of country quiet here at home before he and Seiko go to live with the Stocks for two weeks. (More about that later.) Vicki, thank you so much for keeping Nexus for me. If I would have had to get him from Marietta, I'd have been driving to her home in South Carolina! My dogs and I enjoyed our visit with you and your splendid Lorindol smooths in your beautiful home! Thanks again. All the emails I have received about Nexus have been a nice surprise and very much appreciated. Thank You!
I am leaving in a little while to drive to Kentucky. I will be picking Nexus up from Vicki Spencer. He's only been gone three weeks but I cannot wait to bring him home. Out with Marietta Singleton just three weeks and shown two times, Nexus FINISHED requirements for Champion title which also, of course, makes him a Dual Champion. This was at the Owensboro River City Kennel Club all-breed show, day after the Louisville Dachshund Club specialty.
It is so nice when everything comes together so well. I am very thankful to Marietta. I am glad there are people out there willing to show dogs for other people. I am working this weekend (I work every other weekend) and I simply would not have been in Kentucky to begin with, much less had Nexus groomed as well and shown as well as Marietta did. So many, many THANKS to Marietta and to Vicki Spencer who is keeping Nexus at her home in Owensboro until I drive down Monday and bring him home. That's two generations now of dogs that I have nearly finished when they were young, stopped showing for years, then were easily finished by other people when they were eight years old. I don't intend to make it three. : ) From time to time, I find articles (or they find me) that are worth drawing attention to. This happened today. Julie Knutson of Gunclub Labradors in Colorado authored an excellent article with her views on high drive dogs. I emailed Ms. Knutson to express my appreciation and asked if I could copy it to my website. She gave permission, saying the link to the article on her website will be active only through July. Her "July 2010 Tip of the Month" is the first installation on the new "Articles" page. I will occasionally install others.
Maxine Brinker and Nutmeg have had one Super Terrific Weekend! On Friday, Nutmeg qualifyied (ran clean) in both her classes which were Excellent B Standard and Excellent B Jumpers with Weaves. These are the top echelon classes of agility. On Saturday, she Double Qualified again and placed 3rd in Standard. "So Nutmeg has two more DQ's hope she can get one tomorrow. The courses were real nice. I am so proud of her. She took a 3rd place and in our area that is real good. Then it is rest time, no trials until the end of August. Took all the girls to the show with me. Real nice place with air conditioning which was nice, it is too hot to run outside! She is sleeping now." Today, they made it three for three, qualifying in both classes with a 4th place in Standard. "Nutmeg got another DQ she was so good got a fourth in Standard. She really ran nice this weekend. Now for the fun. I have to take her swimming I told her I would." These were trials of the WI-IL Agility Club of Spring Grove, Illinois. The club changed its trial site this year to the Libertyville Sports Complex in Libertyville, Illinois. "They were asking all the exhibitors if we liked the place and we said, 'Yes!' The place was air conditioned and cool, didn't need any fans, and they also had a lot of parking. It was very, very noisy because there was a basketball tournament going on. It didn't bother my girls at all. Nutmeg ran very well, Sage was so good, she stayed in her crate with no problem and Ginger can't hear and she slept. But it's a very beautiful place and we had really nice courses. They had traps of course but they were fun courses. The dogs actually got to accelerate instead of always twisting and turning. I mean, there should be some difficulty but dogs should be able to run. The one judge, Laura [English], has Cockers, and the other one [Sionag Black] has Goldens and both of them also show their own dogs. You want the judges who show their own dogs. But that's why it is hard to get good judges, when you ask them, they're either judging somewhere else or running their own dogs. Anyway, I'm training Sage with this new trainer and she told me something I should do different with Nutmeg and it helped. Everybody told me she ran awesome. I think so, too." I think so, three! Maxine, Congratulations to you and Nutmeg on your awesome performances this weekend!! Coonhunting is popular in Ohio and a number of families in my area own coonhounds. I sometimes hear the dogs running coon late at night. It is an absorbing sound show. I discovered something interesting today. The founder of the breed of coonhounds known as Treeing Walkers was a man from Indiana named Lester Nance. He's no relation that I'm aware of but the story is intriguing. I came across it on the website American Houndsmen . And then I found another account of Lester Nance as developer of the Treeing Walker. I enjoyed reading about it. I would like to have found more. So much history goes when the old dog people go. I have one computer game addiction. Just one! I don't play it every day but I play it a few times a week, usually with tea after walking my dogs.
It is Word Bubbles at Lumosity.com A few months ago, my goal was 2000 points. Then it went up to 2500 points. Three days ago, I scored 3090 points, my first time over 3000. Today I played again and scored 3060. 3000 is my new goal (!) but I'm not likely to reach it often. There's a lot of luck involved with the three letters that are presented but it's fun. It is supposed to be a game to improve "verbal fluency." We'll see. There are other fun free games at this site, too, but I like Word Bubbles best. If you want to check it out, know that you do not have to create an account to play several of the games. Whenever the create account window opens I just close it again and I'm good to go. Here is an, um, interesting website. I got as far as Page 9 before calling it quits.
awkwardfamilypetphotos.com Page 9 contained my favorite of the Awkward Family Pet Photos to that point. Half way down the page is a glamour shot of seven people and something like 31 dogs. (YOU count em...!) What is wonderful about this photo in my view is how they got that many little dogs to ALL sit, stay, and pose so beautifully! Scores for the all-breed agility trials in Richmond last weekend have been posted online. Maxine had written that she didn't care if she placed in Sunday's Jumpers class or not...Nutmeg was the only dog who qualified...They won the class. : )

Saturday in Jumpers, she ran the 40-second course in 39.43 seconds. Sunday in Standard, she ran the 73-second course in 56.93. Sunday in Jumpers, she ran the 45-sec course in 42.07. Nutmeg ran in four Excellent B classes in two trials, qualified three times, placed 1st three times. The one class where she didn't qualify, she made *one* mistake for 5 faults. ANY mistake in the Excellent classes and the dog is eliminated. I am amazed at the fortitude and resilience of agility people! Writing of fortitude and resilience, Nutmeg and her awesomely dedicated owner have now qualified 121 times in Excellent B Jumpers! Yes, that's right, 121 Qualifying runs in Excellent B Jumpers. WOW! Nutmeg, owned, trained and handled by Maxine Brinker of llinois, continue to rack up Double Qs in Excellent Agility. Maxine writes:
"Had a great weekend. Took a 1st in Standard on Saturday. Nutmeg got distracted in the weave poles in Jumpers but had a great run. The second day she got a Double Q, took first in Standard again. We didn't stay to get the ribbon in Jumpers so I don't know if she placed or not but she got the Double Q so I don't care! She ran real good, loves running on dirt. The weather was Hot!" Indeed, one event promoter had proclaimed, "Looks like it's gonna be a hot one, boys and girls, so pack accordingly." The Spice Team were up to the challenge! These were all-breed AKC agility trials hosted by the American Spaniel Club in Richmond, Virginia. Congratulations to Maxine and Nutmeg! Everything you see on this website had to be COMPLETELY redone in June despite the fact that it LOOKS the same. It was tedious and, yes, frustrating to have to rebuild all the old stuff and basically neglect the new. But it was necessary - and now it is done! Now I am able to post the News that happened in the meantime, then I can update some other pages, too. This makes me happy. : )
This was at the agility trial in Camarillo, California. Go, Olive and congratulations to John and Diane!
Today I drove three hours northwest to the show in Lima, Ohio to take Nexus to pro handler Marietta Singleton. Nexus has been sitting on 14 points and one major win for years now, almost all of which I put on him myself. To become a (show) Champion in the States requires 15 points and two major wins. Nexus, who had major reserves in 3, 3, and 5 point entries as a youngster, is much too close and way too nice a dog not to "get ur done." Besides that, he is eight years old! If I am going to get him finished, I cannot wait any longer.
Nexus' father Luke finished just his past eighth birthday with a third major. Hopefully, like father like son. After this, I don't think I will wait so long. From now on, I think I will be sure to finish them sooner. Like before they turn seven or something like that! Marietta finished Nexus' sister Nadja (owned by Tina Knoll) two summers ago with a Best of Variety over specials and she was pulled in the Hound Group. I saw that Variety win photo and Nadja looked truly beautiful. She is an exceptionally sound, super moving bitch but she doesn't have much coat which had been her downfall in the show ring. She looks so good in the photo with Marietta that you don't even notice she doesn't have much coat. Nexus does not have any gray yet, just two white whiskers <g>, and all the walking, training, and field work we have done have him in excellent physical condition. Marietta will groom him up very nicely, enter shows where there are likely to be majors, and handle him beautifully. The fact that she travels all over and shows almost every weekend is a huge advantage over what I can do. Here's hoping that Nexus will finish and be back home SOON! I miss him already. Congratulations to Asti and to John Willmore and Diane Webb!
I likely won't do this often but I am so very pleased with this item. It is the HD Vision Ultra Sunglasses - as seen on TV. Only, since I don't have TV (because I don't need or want TV), I didn't see them on TV. So I am glad that Carol Luetkens talked about them at the Illinois field trials in May. I tried hers on and liked them so much that a few weeks later I bought a pair for myself. $9.99 at Walgreens! Wow! They are super light and comfortable, fit perfectly, are not a bit loose or one bit tight, and the view is outstanding. They're the first sunglasses I've ever owned that I have forgotten I was wearing them! Thank you, Carol. Like you did, I highly recommend these sunglasses. |
