This was SUvCh NUvCh SVCh FC Hound's Kashmir who died at age 14.5, quite apparently in his sleep, three years ago while I was at work. Kasi fathered just two litters before leaving Sweden at the age of five but he is in many, many pedigrees of dachshunds around the world. And he was the father of just one litter after he came to the States, but that litter of seven, my O litter, consisted of seven very talented and highly accomplished dogs.

Thank you, Marie Gadolin - kennel Hound's, for sending me Kasi and his old Scandinavian bloodlines when I needed him most!

ps  Kasi is in Teo's pedigree as he is a great-grandfather.

DCA President Carl Holder, John Willmore, Diane Webb, and Olive!
Here is a full report from Diane!
We're back from the Dachshund Club of America National Specialty --

48 dachshunds qualified in at least one DCA 2014 field or companion event (field, earthdog, agility, obedience, or rally) and 7 qualified in two events.  Probably around 100 or more dachshunds participated in these events.

Only three dachshunds qualified in 3 events and were Triathlon qualifiers -- our three girls!

-- Olive, who received 16 points from earthdog, agility and obedience.
-- Bossa, who earned 16 points in field, earthdog, and agility.
-- Asti, who earned 10 points in field, agility, and rally.

Olive received one more point than Bossa in Triathlon Conformation to finish with 19 points and is the DCA Triathlon Dog of 2014!

To recap our DCA --

We started with field trials in January.  Bossa won the Open All Age Bitch stake and Best Open, and finished her Field Championship (5 triathlon points).  Asti was awarded an Award of Merit from the Field Champion Bitch stake (6 points).  And Olive was robbed. ;-)

Olive had to qualify in Junior Earthdog the next day to keep her Triathlon hopes alive, and she did (3 pts).  Bossa easily qualified in Junior Earthdog as well (3 pts.)

Olive needed to earn top points in both agility and obedience at DCA last week, and she did.  She qualified in first place in both Masters Preferred Standard and Jumpers with Weaves (9 pts), earning both Preferred High in Trial awards and her PAX (Preferred Agility Excellent) title.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXmT0CZ1QM4

Then, Olive earned a score of 188 in Veteran Novice obedience (4 pts) on Thursday -- conditions were tough (hot and sunny on grass with goose poop) and this was the best score earned by any dachshund in obedience.

Bossa earned her Novice JWW agility title on April 25 and we gambled by moving her up to Open JWW for DCA.  She came through in style, qualifying in first place (8 pts) and earning the JWW High in Trial. Bossa's not quite ready for rally or obedience. ;-)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46kiJm-GTAo

Asti needed to qualify in agility and rally, events in which she has solid skills but hasn't done in several years.  She had a great performance in Novice FAST Preferred (2 pts) on Monday and fought her nerves enough to qualify with a 78 in Advanced Rally (2 pts) on Friday.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSqWx6gio-4

I won't dwell on Triathlon Conformation (the final event on Friday) which once again was a bit of a debacle.  In the end, Olive got 3 points and Bossa 2 points, making Olive the Triathlon winner.  Asti also got 2 points and finished in third place with 12 points.

We are extremely proud of all of them!  It is the accomplishment of a lifetime for Olive, who has now qualified in three Triathlons over five years.  Bossa almost won at just over two years old and continues to show great promise.  And Asti showed what a talented girl she really is.

Wow! More GOOD news this weekend. Olive's turn!
Picture
"Olive did her part towards Dorndorf Weekend by earning QQ #14, 42 points, and two First places with her best Masters Preferred Standard and JWW runs ever!

Our goal was for Olive to be halfway towards PACH by the end of this year, and she needed to earn 18 points this weekend to do that. She and John took care of that goal by earning 29 points on her standard run.  They were only .07 seconds away from earning 30 points.

The end of the JWW course was giving handlers a lot of trouble but John of course handled it brilliantly. And I'm really happy to see Olive getting off to good starts these days." - Diane Webb, CA
C@NGRATULATI@NS to Olive, John, and Diane!!!

I am guessing from the photo that it is not raining in southern California. But I have heard that it never rains in California.

This was Olive's first field trial on jack rabbits [hare], and Asti's first in many years. We went to give Bossa a chance to work jacks. Sadly, the Golden Gate Dachshund Club moved from the ampitheater setting of Lagoon Valley park to the flat lands of Centennial Park just east on the 80.  Bossa didn't get a chance to see a jack before running her brace, and seemed more interested in the tilled earth than the hare that had just been flushed.  I took her out again later, and held her in my arms as the gallery beat. Eventually she saw a jack rabbit crossing the field, and then another and another - she had learned to look in the direction of the "tally ho."  The judges were profligate with the rabbits - only taking ones they saw.  So when a rabbit broke in front of us and Bossa saw it run toward the road, I waited a while and then let her work the line.  On that front, the weekend was a success.

Lunch was back at Lagoon Valley. We decided to stay at Centennial, having been assured that we'd go from there.  Well when lunch ended, Pat and Gerry Price drove by to say we had to move over to another parking lot to continue.  That meant packing up the van and moving, and by the time we arrived the gallery was long gone.  Asti and I headed out to find them. Asti was in the third brace, Olive was in the eighth. Asti was acting like every step on the grass was stepping on broken glass.  I thought I would find the gallery, put her down on the line and release her and that would be all for us.  But as we got closer, Asti could hear the gallery beating and started to pull.

Her first rabbit was a long 100 yard run with a few gentle right bends.  Asti left her bracemate in the dust and followed the line as far as the judges could have seen it. She then worked the far end of the field searching for the rabbit. There was a fire lane plowed in the field, and Asti was working back and forth along that when I picked her up 150+ yards from the gallery.

Olive's first check was less that 15 feet from the start. When Olive indicated that she had the line, I released her.  She made the check nicely and carried the line with her bracemate following her.

Asti was called back second, Olive was called back third.  The dog sitting fourth had been defeated in first series by the dog called back high. (Olive's first series bracemate  was NBQ.)

I had Asti in my arms when tally was in second series. Unfortunately, she saw the rabbit.  We released both dogs on the line and they both curled left well short of where the dogs expected the trail.  Asti was 100 yards away again in the direction of the sight line as the dog sitting high pottered and eventually sat waiting for her handler to pick her up.  Asti kept working... and the judges took a long time to call "pick them up."  By the time they did, I hadn't seen Asti for at least a minute.  It took quite a while to find her. She kept bumping jacks and the gallery kept hearing her on chases. I figured Olive was on the clock, but they were actually waiting for me to get back and get her.

Olive and her bracemate were put down on a long left arc starting from a form.  Unfortunately, on the way there, Olive picked up some other scent and when I released her she doubled back.  The other dog was convinced Olive was right and her handler never released. I got Olive and we went further down the line for a second release.  Olive again doubled back, but this time the other dog found the line and got a clear win.

That was a trial.

Absolute was my first time running in a trio.  Three long hairs - one tiny mini B&T, one bigger B&T, and Asti.  The judges had just a general idea of the start and wanted us to let the dogs show the way.  Asti took the lead and drove down the line, but she seemed surprised to have two fast little dogs barrel past her.  All three in the trio worked like a great team, harking in on each other as they tried to find the line.  Asti was the first to carry across the plowed lane, which is probably why she didn't win.  The other two kept working the near side.  The Open Dog ended up with Absolute, but honestly it was a fantastic hunt and I was very proud of Asti.  She worked great with the two strange dogs and they covered a TON of field.

Thanks for the awesome bloodlines! Sorry the picture isn't so great.  It was cold at the end of a long day. - John Willmore & Diane Webb, CA
Thank you so much for the write-up and I like the picture a lot! Congratulations! I look forward to hearing about DCA next month.

Though I made improvements on my website recently, I have not blogged anything for awhile. I am very happy today to post the news that Olive has earned the Junior Earthdog title! And - with that - Olive is titled in all six AKC performance and companion events!

Yaaaaay Olive!!

Field Champion
Tracking Dog
Junior Earthdog
Companion Dog
Rally Advanced Excellent
Whether Olive would have become a show Champion had I shown her will never be known. She is a very nice bitch, however, and in a MULTITUDE of ways!

Congratulations to Olive's owners, trainers, and handlers for the majority of her achievements, Diane Webb and John Willmore of California. I am so happy and appreciative that you were willing to take Asti's 5.5 year old sister and do all these things with her!

dorndorf dachshunds at dca

5/20/2013

I did not attend the Dachshund Club of America National events this year, most of which were held at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, Missouri. Dorndorf was wonderfully represented in the performance arena, however, as these many bulletins testify. KUDOS and my THANKS to you all! You are the BEST! ---Love, Patt

Tracking

May 9      Ochre, owned and handled by Laura Knoll, ran her Variable Surface Tracking test with excellent effort! Tina Knoll wrote: "Just to recap, they started strong then over ran the first turn. They recovered, took the first turn and Ochre was pulling like crazy, almost took the next turn. They disqualified but did all the rest just perfect with the track layer just following." VST may have a passing rate of 5-8% but I see VST / CT (Champion Tracker) in their future. This is a talented team!

May 10     Sisters Sage, owned by Maxine Brinker, and Seiko, owned by Tina Knoll and handled by Laura, were entered in the Tracking Dog Excellent test. Unfortunately, none of the three dachshunds passed. TDX tests have a passing rate between 15-20% annually; they are not a walk in the park! But they both gave it a very good go!

Earthdog

May 11     Nutmeg qualifies in Junior Earthdog for her second leg and the JE title! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Nutmeg!

May 11     Gretel qualifies in Senior Earthdog for her third leg and the SE title! Congratulations to owner Jennifer Fry, handler Laura Knoll, and Gretel!
Picture

May 11     We all had big hopes that Nadja would earn her fourth qualification in Master Earthdog for the ME title. But this time Nadja had other ideas! As does her owner Tina Knoll, we look foward to Nadja getting that fourth leg!
Picture
Nadja had great fun being naughty.

May 12     Diane Webb writes: "We did earthdog with Olive and Bossa yesterday and today.  Neither passed yesterday, but today Olive passed and earned her first Junior Earthdog leg!  She ran straight into the tunnel (just like yesterday) but this time didn't come back out.  She got to the quarry in 17 seconds and barked and whined for over 60 seconds.

Olive was the third of 30 JE dogs to run today or which 7 passed. We waited over two hours before we got her ribbon.  So Olive was tired and hot and was looking into the sun, and the award photos aren't very good.  But I am very proud of her!!"

Congratulations to Diane and Olive!

agility

May 14     Nutmeg, 11 years, qualified with a 3rd place in a class of 14 dachshunds competing in the Master Jumpers with Weaves class! Her niece Sage also qualified in the same class! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker, Nutmeg, and Sage!

May 14     Diane writes: "Olive and John had an excellent day at DCA Agility, qualifying in Novice FAST Preferred (1st place), Masters Standard Preferred (2nd Place), and Masters JWW Preferred (2nd Place).  Olive earned her third double Q and 26 points towards PACH [Preferred Agility Champion].  Once again, Olive just missed winning High In Trial; this time she was about a second behind the Standard Preferred HIT Winner.

The venue was awesome -- artificial turf over the matted floor covering the entire facility in a large, well-lit, air-conditioned facility. I've got videos of Olive which I'll post at some point.  No photographers or videographers at the trial."

Congratulations to John Willmore and Olive!

Obedience and rally

May 15     Sage qualified in Novice B Obedience debut, placing 3rd and earning the first leg of her CD! Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Sage!

May 16     Nutmeg and Sage both qualified in the Advanced B Rally class with Nutmeg earning 2nd Place of the 10 dachshunds competing! Congratulations to Maxine and the Spice Girls!

May 16     Olive qualified in Rally B Excellent for the necessary third leg in the annual DCA Triathlon! Combined with her passing/qualifying performances in earthdog and agility, Olive has qualified with a chance to win the Triathlon. Whether she does will be determined by performances of other Triathlon contenders that are still to come. Congratulations to Diane Webb and Olive!

May 17     Nutmeg qualified with a 1st Place in Open A obedience for her 3rd leg and her CDX! Putting this achievement in perspective, only four dachshunds earned the CDX title in 2012. Congratulations to Maxine Brinker and Nutmeg!

triathlon

May 17     John and Diane end their DCA week with Olive being one of only 4 qualifiers in the DCA Triathlon, she finished 3rd!

Congratulations Team Olive!

Way to GO, everyone!! ♥♥♥

olive has qualified in all 5 EXc B std runs

[Olive is MACH FC Autumn Olive von Dorndorf VCD1 TD CD RAE MXS MJB NF Wa-T BHP-G, owned by John Willmore and Diane Webb of California.]

So far in 2013, Olive has run five Excellent B Standard courses - and Qualified five times! Her Q rate in Exc B Jumpers is one for three. Those are good stats. In both classes, however, John (handling) and Diane have seen Olive's points accumulation take a hit as her speed has decreased. They plan to run her in Preferred classes starting next month which will have Olive jumping four inches instead of eight. The reduced jump height has been very motivating for her in training.

And how do you like this photo! It is easily one of my very favorites of Olive. Initially, I did not like the blur of John's leg in the picture. But very soon I decided that I agree with Diane - it actually adds something nice to the photo. John's leg is not only framing Olive but, to me, it is really fostering the sense of partnership.

I LOVE this photo!

olive with 71 qualifying runs on the year

Team Olive certainly surpassed their goal of 60 qualifying agility Excellent B runs for 2012!

Not to mention the Master Agility Champion title that Olive earned on August 11!

Way to GO, Olive!

Of  Double Q #31 today, John writes:
Excellent B Standard, Olive ran in 67.09 (SCT 76). Not a good course for us - starting and ending with a line of offset jumps - but Olive had a good run, particularly after the weaves. In fact, so fast that she almost took a wrong course tunnel on me. 3rd place.

Olive's time on the Jumpers course was 47.62 (SCT 50). A better start for our last run of the year, my timing was a little off heading into a tunnel and almost cost us a Refusal but Olive drove on and earned 4th place.

After a couple of days doing Field Trials, it was good to turn in some nice agility runs. My handling was a little sloppy but Olive was driven. Lifetime, this was Olive's 31st Double Q!

John writes:
Diane asked me on the drive home whether I thought Olive or Asti had a better weekend.  It was an interesting question.  I think Olive's second series run yesterday was probably the most impressive run of the two days, with Asti's first series today a close second and Asti's fourth series run in third.  I'm not sure either was clearly better than the other - I think both girls are really talented, Asti more naturally and Olive more skilled.  I love running them both, although I probably favor Asti slightly from the bond we formed over our years of hunting together.  I wouldn't trade either for the world!
Congratulations! And I believe it is safe to say that Asti and Olive wouldn't trade you and Diane either!

bossa 2nd of 12 opens, olive 3rd of 12 champions

Nice placements today, earned by Bossa and Olive!
Diane left you a message on your cell phone, but I thought I'd give you more details about today's field trial results.

I judged Open Dogs first thing in the morning (as a substitute), so the girls all got to rest in.  The dog we put up first won Absolute - always a nice validation. :)

Bossa had a really nice first series in Open Bitches, taking a long line along a road and making the check, although overshooting a bit to the far side of the road... the dirt road made her take a while to find the check.  She was called back high.  In second series we had a really short line between trees, and she didn't really understand what to do and stood around grazing, so she dropped to second (behind eventual first and new field champion Star).  In third series she defended well taking a bending line around a tree.  She finished in second (class of 12) for her first six points!

Bossa works a lot like Asti - moving fast and making fast decisions.

Olive was drawn in fifth brace and Asti in sixth for FC.  I was late to the line and hadn't heard the additional bits of line, so I was a bit sad to see Olive break off to the left at high speed, but it turns out that was the continuation of the line out of the cover.  Olive was called back fourth.

Second series, Olive's rabbit started in a dead tree stump and we had good line on it.  She and her bracemate both started on the first part of the line fast, but Olive nailed the check and did a TON of line. Easy win.

Third series we had another tight release into cover.  I think I released too soon, before Olive really had the line.  We lost that on my lack of handling experience. Olive placed third out of 12 field champions.  A solid performance given how rusty we all are.

I was really proud of all three girls.  Bossa is still very green but got the idea fast - the few bits of trailing practice we've done clearly helped, the judges were impressed with how she worked the check.  Asti was very happy to be in the field and really looked good (and had MUCH better recalls than in the old days). And Olive looked great in my first time handling her in the field (aside from one run at DCA 2010). Her tracking background really shows - she's more methodical than Asti, who works more on instinct.

Tally ho! - John Willmore, CA

Congratulations to all of you!

Diane Webb and John Willmore sent me two photos from California that they'd had BEAUTIFULLY framed. The large one (20x11) is the photo of 5 Dorndorf dogs taken at DCA in Wisconsin last year. Here are photos of that photo: alone and also newly put up on my dog wall. The other photo they sent is an 8x10 of Olive who became a new Master Agility Champion in 2012. I have emailed them these photos and also wanted to share them here. THANK YOU, JOHN AND DIANE! Hope everyone is having a great day!

SCT for Excellent Standard was 70 seconds. Olive ran it in 63.47 for 6 MACH points. (See video.)

SCT for Excellent Jumpers was 47 seconds which Olive made on the nose.
The footing was pretty bad today. The ground was soaked in the rings. It drizzled off and on and the light spots in the ring are rice husks put down to dry up the mud. I'm proud of Olive for keeping up her effort.   - John Willmore
I am proud of all of you! Congratulations!

In Excellent Jumpers, Olive ran the SCT of 45 seconds in 42.50 for 2 more MACH points toward MACH2.
A cooler day, small breakfast with victory boxes after each run. Olive looked like she was having fun, both in and out of the ring.  - John Willmore

I don't have the specifics for today's agility trial in Glen Allen, Virginia yet. But Olive qualified in both Excellent B classes again today and earned 44 MACH points for the weekend!

Double Congratulations to John, Diane, and Olive!

Not only that, but John and Diane met up with Derek and Jenn who own Taya and Tasha's brother Thor! Called Seymour, 5.5 months old, Diane described him as "a really nice little guy.  19 lbs, maybe just a tad overweight.  Very stable, happy, energetic. Derek and Jenn are very nice and they adore him. Nike (the big dog) is very cool too and they get along great. I think that Seymour probably takes after Ami more than Mars, except that he has Mars' eyes. We will send photos and video to you, maybe after we get home."

Thank you! I look forward to seeing and hearing more about Olive and Seymour from this weekend!

[Olive is FC MACH Autumn Olive von Dorndorf VCD1 TD CD RAE MXS MJB NF, owned by John Willmore and Diane Webb.]
Olive is with her owners in Virginia this weekend. They are attending business, visiting family, and participating in a couple of agility trials. They are the trials of the Central Virginia Agility Club, outdoors on grass in Glen Allen, Virginia.

John wrote that it was their first trial in 2.5 months and Olive looked great.

On the Jumpers course, SCT was 52 seconds and Olive's time was 43.60 - giving her 8 MACH points and 2nd place in the 8 inch class! "A cold morning for our first run in a long while. A little slow on the dog walk, but otherwise a good solid run."

Course time on the Standard course was 74 seconds. Olive's time was 56.08 for 17 MACH points and 1st place! "Olive broke her stay on the leadout and so didn't explode into the starting sequence like I wanted. But still a nice run!"

Congratulations to John, Diane, and Olive!

Olive Is Master Agility CHAMPION!

8/11/2012

With temperatures close to 100 degrees, a soaked-down Olive earns the final point needed for her Master Agility Champion (MACH) title. She qualified with 10 MACH points on the Excellent Standard course under judge Marquand Cheek at the DASH trial in Fountain Valley, CA.

(How interestingly coincidental that Marq Cheek was the judge that the very first MACH dachshund, MACH Jackie Brink v Dorndorf L VCD2 RN TT, owned and handled by Maxine Brinker of Illinois, titled under in Wisconsin in 2001!)

On the entire west coast, Olive is the third MACH dachshund behind two smooths, thus she is the first MACH longhair.

AND, she is the first Master Agility Champion dachshund in the state of California.

HUGE C@NGRATULATI@NS on your awesome accomplishment to John, Diane, and Olive!!!!!!

Otter, five weeks, pulling hard on my shirt. Members of this litter have asked for and thrived on activity all their lives.
Dual-registered with AKC and the DTK and born on this date in 2004, the litter of seven by SUvCH NUvCH SvCH FC Hound’s Kashmir (Sweden) x FC Marta v Dorndorf L JE LH is the most accomplished litter I have ever bred. They are (in alphabetical order with males listed first per DTK tradition):

ABS5 FC Alpine Owl von Dorndorf TD JE NA OAJ SchwhK SchwhKF BHP-G Wa-T, Patricia Nance
ABS FC Apache Otter von Dorndorf (Lost from his new home at 3 years, I pray that Otter is alive and well.)
ABS7 FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf, Stan Knoll

ABS5 FC Annie Ochre von Dorndorf TDX, Laura Knoll
ABS FC Arlina Ossie von Dorndorf RE AXJ BHP-2, called Asti, John Willmore and Diane Webb
FC Autumn Olive von Dorndorf VCD1 TD CD RE MX MXJ Wa-T BHP-G, John Willmore and Diane Webb

  • Six of the seven are Field Champions.
  • Five of the seven have won at least one Absolute.
  • Odin is doing a superb job of recovering wounded deer for hunters.
  • Oslo has this spring surpassed his grandmother FC Ilsa v Dorndorf L as the winningest longhair in US field trial history.
  • Owl is the first and only longhair in the US to earn DTK blood-tracking titles AND was Absolute Winner at his first field trial in an entry of 157 dachshunds.
  • Ochre was Absolute at the 2008 DCA National Field Trial AND earned Tracking Dog Excellent at the 2011 DCA National, the first TDX test she and her young owner ever entered.
  • Olive is very nearly a Master Agility Champion.

Happy Birthday to Owl, Otter, Oslo, Odin, Ochre, Asti, and Olive!

Laura Knoll and her talented "baby girl" Ochre.
Laura Knoll has been Ochre's owner and handler since Ochre was nine months old and Laura was seven. All the accomplishments, awards, and titles are really great, but Laura's relationship with Ochre and their amazing teamwork is the breath of life for breeders like me. Here is what dear Laura posted on Facebook: "My baby girl turned eight years old! She has been such a blessing in my life and I thank God, her breeder, and my parents for allowing us to be so successful in our seven years of running together! She became a Field Champion at about two years old and has led me to winning five Absolutes, with one being the National Absolute in 2008. [I've made a link to a good article on the AKC website.] And two tracking titles; Tracking Dog and Tracking Dog Excellent. Ochre has taught me so many things about field trials and has let me travel all over the States. She is one of the best things that has happened to me! Happy Birthday Ochre and your litter mates!!!"
