In the Madison Area Dachshund Club class of 18 Field Champion Dogs, three of the five ribbons went to Nexus, Oslo, and Owl!

I am proud of all of them but especially 12 year old Nexus. On an 85 degree afternoon, the warmest day we've had in months, Nexus put forth great effort had some excellent runs!

I did not run Nexus and Owl on Friday or Saturday because I wanted to concentrate on my youngsters Taya (on Friday), and Viljo (Friday and Saturday.) I think the older dogs were telling me, to heck with this sitting in the car business, we want to run rabbits!

Still a bit amped, Nexus is struggling to get down vs being still for a photo.

Stan didnt have Oslo in the clubhouse for awards so I did not get a photo of him. But it should be noted that Oslo, the most winning Longhair of all time, still wins and places with regularity. I am very proud of Stan Knoll and Oslo!

At the same trial where Taya was 1st of 17 Open Bitches, Oslo was 2nd of 15 Field Champion Dogs!

Here is Oslo receiving his award and singing! Not howling, that's Stan, but Oslo has a beautiful voice. haha! I think we are singing Happy Birthday to Linda Snyder.

Congratulations to Stan Knoll and Oslo!!

Taya was entered in her first field trial today. I really debated putting her in because I didn't think she was quite ready. She has been out on rabbits five times and all those times were within the past 10 days. Stan Knoll talked me into it and I filled out the entry form 10 minutes before closing time.

After a very good first series run, Tayter was called back High of 17 Open Bitches and went on to Win the class. Yay Tay! (There are no runs for Absolute this weekend.)

I have decided not to enter Taya tomorrow or Sunday. She may be pregnant, the weather is going to be warmer than we have seen in five months, and I want to develop her a bit more before she competes in the fall which is what I originally had planned for her.

But I am very pleased with how Taya handled herself and her running mates today!

Stan Knoll and Oslo bested an entry of 59 dachshunds in Kirbyville, Texas. They are pictured with Absolute judges Ashley Dumas (left) and Sandi Myers.
Super proud of Daddy and Oslo today! Called back second in a class of 15 Field Champion Dogs, Oslo won the class, then went on to win his 14th Absolute! Thanks to the judges and all the people who put on the trial. It was a great weekend!  - Laura Knoll, MS
In the class of 8 Field Champion Bitches, Oslo's daughter Seiko had the second best run in 1st series, was High after 2nd series,  then finished in second place. Super Seiko was handled by her owner Laura Knoll.

Congratulations to Stan & Oslo, and Laura & Seiko!!

Cousin Bossa was back High, stayed High after additional runs in 2nd and 4th series, and won the class of 18 Open Bitches at the National field trial in California today!

The trial was run on hare (jackrabbits) in Vacaville, California. The win and the 18 points also earned Bossa the title Field Champion.

AND she won the run for Best Open! Very well done!

Congratulations to Bossa and her owner/handlers John Willmore and Diane Webb. Also to her breederMay-Gun Bandinge of Gotland and to Marie Gadolin of Sweden.

Kudos to all of you!

oslo and seiko win both field champion classes

Seiko was called back High and Won the Field Champion Bitches class of 9 this morning.

Her father Oslo was called back second and Won the class of 11 Field Champion Dogs this afternoon.

This was at the Mission City Dachshund Club field trial in Kirbyville, Texas. Seiko is owned by Tina Knoll, and Oslo by Stan Knoll who handled both dogs today.

So in the run-offs for Absolute, guess who was Best Field Champion. Oslo's little girl Seiko!

At this trial then, Seiko was braced with and defeated the top Field Champion of 2013 (Linda Snyder's Hopi), the top Field Champion of all time (Cheri Faust's Danika), and the top Longhaired & number 5 Field Champion of all time (Stan Knoll's Oslo)! Talk about an excellent day!

Congratulations to the Knoll Family! I hope to get a photo or two to add to this post!

This was Olive's first field trial on jack rabbits [hare], and Asti's first in many years. We went to give Bossa a chance to work jacks. Sadly, the Golden Gate Dachshund Club moved from the ampitheater setting of Lagoon Valley park to the flat lands of Centennial Park just east on the 80.  Bossa didn't get a chance to see a jack before running her brace, and seemed more interested in the tilled earth than the hare that had just been flushed.  I took her out again later, and held her in my arms as the gallery beat. Eventually she saw a jack rabbit crossing the field, and then another and another - she had learned to look in the direction of the "tally ho."  The judges were profligate with the rabbits - only taking ones they saw.  So when a rabbit broke in front of us and Bossa saw it run toward the road, I waited a while and then let her work the line.  On that front, the weekend was a success.

Lunch was back at Lagoon Valley. We decided to stay at Centennial, having been assured that we'd go from there.  Well when lunch ended, Pat and Gerry Price drove by to say we had to move over to another parking lot to continue.  That meant packing up the van and moving, and by the time we arrived the gallery was long gone.  Asti and I headed out to find them. Asti was in the third brace, Olive was in the eighth. Asti was acting like every step on the grass was stepping on broken glass.  I thought I would find the gallery, put her down on the line and release her and that would be all for us.  But as we got closer, Asti could hear the gallery beating and started to pull.

Her first rabbit was a long 100 yard run with a few gentle right bends.  Asti left her bracemate in the dust and followed the line as far as the judges could have seen it. She then worked the far end of the field searching for the rabbit. There was a fire lane plowed in the field, and Asti was working back and forth along that when I picked her up 150+ yards from the gallery.

Olive's first check was less that 15 feet from the start. When Olive indicated that she had the line, I released her.  She made the check nicely and carried the line with her bracemate following her.

Asti was called back second, Olive was called back third.  The dog sitting fourth had been defeated in first series by the dog called back high. (Olive's first series bracemate  was NBQ.)

I had Asti in my arms when tally was in second series. Unfortunately, she saw the rabbit.  We released both dogs on the line and they both curled left well short of where the dogs expected the trail.  Asti was 100 yards away again in the direction of the sight line as the dog sitting high pottered and eventually sat waiting for her handler to pick her up.  Asti kept working... and the judges took a long time to call "pick them up."  By the time they did, I hadn't seen Asti for at least a minute.  It took quite a while to find her. She kept bumping jacks and the gallery kept hearing her on chases. I figured Olive was on the clock, but they were actually waiting for me to get back and get her.

Olive and her bracemate were put down on a long left arc starting from a form.  Unfortunately, on the way there, Olive picked up some other scent and when I released her she doubled back.  The other dog was convinced Olive was right and her handler never released. I got Olive and we went further down the line for a second release.  Olive again doubled back, but this time the other dog found the line and got a clear win.

That was a trial.

Absolute was my first time running in a trio.  Three long hairs - one tiny mini B&T, one bigger B&T, and Asti.  The judges had just a general idea of the start and wanted us to let the dogs show the way.  Asti took the lead and drove down the line, but she seemed surprised to have two fast little dogs barrel past her.  All three in the trio worked like a great team, harking in on each other as they tried to find the line.  Asti was the first to carry across the plowed lane, which is probably why she didn't win.  The other two kept working the near side.  The Open Dog ended up with Absolute, but honestly it was a fantastic hunt and I was very proud of Asti.  She worked great with the two strange dogs and they covered a TON of field.

Thanks for the awesome bloodlines! Sorry the picture isn't so great.  It was cold at the end of a long day. - John Willmore & Diane Webb, CA
Thank you so much for the write-up and I like the picture a lot! Congratulations! I look forward to hearing about DCA next month.

outstanding oslo

In a previous post, I congratulated Marvelous Mieka and Super Seiko on their accomplishments this weekend in Georgia. It is about time I mention Outstanding Oslo!

Oslo was called back 2nd and Won the class of 22 Field Champion Dogs on Saturday!

Oslo was called back 4th and Won the class of 20 Field Champion Dogs on Sunday!

ABS13 FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf, 9 years old, is owned by Stan Knoll of Mississippi. Devotion between these two being mutual, complete, and pretty well known, I should say that it almost didn't happen. The Stan-and-Oslo-team first took oxygen when baby Oslo's prospective home with a deer hunter in Louisiana fell through. It further developed upon the death of Stan's young bitch Anika. And it was born in a light bulb moment in the shower in Poplarville, Mississippi in 2005. I'm not sure that Stan had dried off yet when he phoned me and said that he wanted Oslo. A couple of months later, Oslo left Ohio for the second time and he wasn't coming back.

Stan phoned this past Sunday evening on the drive home from Georgia. He said he believes that Oslo has moved into the Number Five spot among the top trial competitors on the All-Time list of DCA field trial merit points. Wonderful! But Five, Six, or pick up sticks, the boys from southern Miss have done their little fan club proud!

Congratulations to Stan & Oslo! I didn't actually have much to do with it, but I sure am glad that you two teamed up!

Well, this was interesting. Found some photos that I didn't know I had! They are not in the best condition but I am very happy to have them.

They are from a Central Ohio Dachshund Club field trial held in the early '80s at the Chief Tarhe Beagle Club in West Rushville, Ohio.

Field Champion winners are posed in reverse of the usual order. So left to right = NBQ thru First Place:

Cathern Essman, John Jeanneney, Syd Baker, Rick Oberstar, Don Chapman.

I am sorry that Cathern is mostly cut out of the photo. Paul and Cathern Essman were instrumental in bringing dachshund field trials to Ohio and, therefore, the midwest.

Absolute Winner:

Patt Nance, Bill Bay, Bob Chapman, Roger Humeston.

Bill Bay was President of Chief Tarhe and the only beagler in the photo. He judged for us more than once.

Called back 3rd, Oslo went on to win the class of 13 male Field Champions at the Buckeye Dachshund Club field trial. Later in the day, Oslo was Best Field Champion, then became Absolute Winner (Best in Trial) in the entry of 47 dachshunds competing on the grounds of the Hilltop Beagle Club in Cowansville, Pennsylvania!

This was Absolute Winner award number 12 for Oslo. Few dachshunds have won this many;  the only longhair with more Absolutes is Oslo's maternal grandmother FC Ilsa v Dorndorf L who had 15.

A big congratulations to Stan and Oslo! Way to go!

[Viljo is FC Cadium Aurinkosoturi, 2 years old male, bred in Finland by Tia Eskelinen, owned by Patricia Nance.]

Today, Viljo placed 4th in the class of 15 Field Champion Dogs at the Badger Dachshund Club field trial in northern Illinois. He is pictured with judges Larry Gohlke of Wisconsin and Pam Bethke of South Dakota. Larry commented on Viljo's actions in the field, "I told Pam that that's the dog I would take home. He was really using his nose to show us the line. He is wired right."

Thank you, Larry.

It is a fact that Viljo inherently has an excellent head for the basics. He is not yet getting enough done to generate more call backs and placements - but with more rabbit experience he will.

There were 16 Field Champion Dogs in competition on the grounds of the Flint River Beagle Club in Hampton, Georgia today. In second series, Nexus came back High and Owl 4th. When judging concluded, Nexus was the winner, Owl placed 3rd, and Viljo was named NBQ.

What a weekend we had! Congratulations to all our talented guys!

They are pictured below with judge Michael Nothstein. None of them were particularly happy to be having their photo taken. They were hungry and while waiting for photos, I'd been feeding them pieces of muffins left over from breakfast. Nexus is struggling to get down and back to 'em, Owl has a pained "oh if I have to" expression and Viljo is not taking his eyes off the muffins which are on the table to his right. Like if he blinks, they might disappear, ha ha!

Furthermore, one of the judges kindly told me that Viljo had had the 6th best score in the class.  There is no recognition for 6th but I am proud of Viljo, too.

Later, Oslo capped the day off by becoming Absolute Winner in a total entry of 75 dachshunds. It is the 11th time that Oslo has won the  Absolute Winner award. Not many dachshunds have won 11 or more Absolutes! I will find out how many have done it.

harvest moon article by shawn Nies

1/24/2013

In yesterday's post, I mentioned the Dachshund Club of America magazine. It is a quarterly publication of the national breed club. Lynne Dahlen of Wisconsin is the talented editor.

The most recent issue, Winter 2012, has a very nice write-up by Shawn Nies about the Harvest Moon Classic field trials (eight trials) held in Roscoe, Illinois over 10 days this past October. Shawn listed all the states exhibitors came from (15 plus Canada) and all the beagle men who helped us. She mentioned weather conditions (extremely dry), extra-curricular tracking practice and certifications managed by Lois Ballard (Viljo and Taya were both certified by Lois during the week), the earthdog test, and the numbers of entries - 724 total for the week when all was said and done! Honorable mentions include the "wild thing" dinner, the bonfire, and the raffle which earned $1000 to be given to the Northern Illinois Beagle Club for grounds maintenance. And the report noted a huge, well-deserved thank you to Cheri Faust and Larry Gohlke. Cheri and Larry organized the 1st annual Harvest Moon Classic and worked very hard to make it all a great success.

Shawn's article included some new Field Champions, of which Viljo was one:
Jeff Boehne, who is one of several new people to field trial at this event, finished his red standard wire GCH DC Hundeleben Zis Und Zat of Brownwood SW (Ziggy), on Friday at the DCGL field trail and then Ziggy got NBQ at the MADC FT during his first time to run with "the big dogs." Patt Nance finished her red, standard long, FC Cadium Aurinkosoturi (Viljo) on Friday at the DCGL FT and he took first place in the FCD class at the MADC FT on Saturday! Sherry Ruggieri finished her 7 month old wild boar standard wire bitch, FC Tusoksori-Ugraszto Husniya (Niya) and she came back to earn a third place in the field champion bitch class. Pamala Hopkins finished her wild boar miniature smooth boy, FC Hoppledachs's Keokut ME CGC (Keo) and he came back in the field champion dog class with a fourth place. There are definitely some very competitive new dogs in the Field Champion classes and I will look forward to seeing more of them.
Shawn, I look forward to it, too!

Thank you for the excellent article and photos.

Oslo 5th in DCA Field trial merit points 2012

1/2/2013

Following are the Dachshund Club of America's Top Ten in Field for 2012. Congratulations to Stan Knoll and Oslo and everyone! It takes a lot of talent and dedication - as one top obedience campaigner wrote years ago: much willingness to sit for hours and hours on your butt, staring at the road through a windshield - to make it to this level!

[Dogs are listed by call name, registered name, number of merit points, and number of placements.]

1. Danika  FC Danika vom Nordlicht TD ME, 343, 17
2. Zuni  DC Rellih's Little Indian MW TD SE, 340, 22
3. Dixie  FC Anja von Moosbach-Zuzelek RN SE, 270, 17
4, Auggie  FC Augden von Moosbach-Zuzelek RE ME, 239, 14
5. Oslo  FC Audi Oslo Von Dorndorf CA, 237, 11
6. Lily  FC Diamant Lily von Lowenherz, 224, 10
7. Veela  FC Viola von der Hardt-Hohe JE, 186, 8
8. Carmen  GCH DC Siddachs Carmen MW, 168, 8
9. Stanze  FC Stanze von Lowenherz JE, 165, 8
10. Trooper  FC Rosie's Little Trooper, 163, 10

I went to many fewer field trials this year than the usual in years past. Nevertheless, Owl had two nice placements for 48 points and Nexus two placements for 40 points. Merit points are earned one point per dog defeated in the Field Champion class. For example, in a class of 17 Field Champions 1st place nets 17 merit points, 2nd place 16 points, 3rd place 15 points and 4th place 14 points.

Besides that, a dog must have at least two placements in the Field Champion class to make it onto the merit points list, he cannot have just one. In 2012, 81 dachshunds earned two or more placements in the Field Champion class. I have only listed the Top 10.

Thank you to Tracy Freeling, DCA Field Trial Statistician, for receiving and compiling the numbers.

Stan Knoll and Oslo after a day in the field in 2008. I am using this photo because, while it would obviously be difficult for a dachshund to be joined with his person at the hip, here is proof that it is entirely possible for them to be joined at the knee!
